HPLP2475w
Once correctly calibrated, this monitor would be suitable for use by professional photographers. As for games and films, you're better off looking elsewhere.
This product test highlights the contrast issues often associated with IPS technology. That's not the only drawback though, as power consumption is also a problem, and even though it doesn't affect the picture quality, you're likely to notice the difference on your electricity bill. By default, the HP LP2475w guzzles almost 100 watts of power, whereas the latest 27-inch TN panel from Iiyama, for example, consumes just 32 watts.

HP LP2475W
The HP LP2475W is a very good monitor. Colour reproduction is accurate and nuanced, and even though it has some colours deviations before calibration, LP2475W has better colours than the vast majority of monitors in the 24-inch segment –mainly due to the quality H-IPS panel. The large colour space might be a problem for very critical viewing, however.Viewing angles are wide but the black level is not as deep as on the LP2275W with the S-PVA panel. I didn?t expect this either but it shows me that IPS panels still have trouble with deep blacks. Shadow detail on LP2475W is not perfect, either. The ergonomics allow the user to adjust height, rotating, tilt and pivot. Functionality is good as well and LP2475W had comprehensive picture options settings and extra features such as PIP/POP. The user can also choose from a wide range of inputs such as D-SUB (VGA), DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort.
HP is a major global player and even though monitors is not their main marked, HP has some interesting models. The most appealing is the 75 range which includes LP2275W & LP2475W...

DellU2711
If you're not a big gamer, then the Dell U2711 is an excellent choice. It can boast accurate colour reproduction and great hardware. As long as you've got the right connectors, its native resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels means you can work on two documents side by side.
Not only did the UZ711's contrast ratio remain stubbornly low (see 'Colours' in the main article), but its energy consumption rocketed at the same time. Using the default configuration, the 27'' monitor uses no less than 100 W. That falls to 86 W when you tour the brightness down to 200 cd/m², which is better but still higher. For comparison, the Iiyama Prolite B2712HDS and its 1920 x 1080 pixel TN panel only uses 32 W in equivalent conditions. As a result, U2711 owners should always remember to turn it off when they're not using it, unless they're looking forward to a nasty surprise when they get their electricity bill.

Dell Ultrasharp U2711
Can PC monitors be too big? Speak to owners of uber 30-inch displays and you might be surprised by the answer. That's where the Dell Ultrasharp U2711 steps in.At 27 inches, it's significantly smaller than ultra-panels such as HP's ZR30W. But thanks to a monster pixel grid of 2,560 x 1,440, it gives very little away in terms of native resolution. It's also quite a bit cheaper than most 30-inchers. Given the somewhat dubious ergonomics of 30-inch screens, why pay significantly more for the likes of HP's ZR30W?Of course, the Dell Ultrasharp U2711 isn't exactly cheap itself, but at least that means you get a first-rate feature set. The panel itself is a quality 27-inch item. It's the very same panel as found in the 27-inch Apple iMac, in fact. Dell hasn't skimped on the input options, either. Everything from HDMI to DisplayPort and component video is provided.Power consumptionWatts: maximum / approx 170cd/m2 – lower is betterDell Ultrasharp U2711: 130W / 80WHanns.G HZ281: 79W / 32WHP ZR30W: 160W / 65W

PCFormat Issue 258: Dell U2412M
The U2412M from Dell might look like a P2411H Professional series, but there's one important difference: it's an IPS screen, not a TN. That means better colour representation, better viewing angle and a higher price. Screen types are seldom highlighted by manufacturers but they are the single biggest deciding factor in your screen's image quality. The question is: why pay more for IPS? Class is now in session. Crystals in in-plane switching (or IPS) screens are aligned horizontally between two oppositely polarised glass substrates, rather than the vertical arrangement of crystal rods found in Twisted Nematic panels (TN). In IPS screens, crystals are kept parallel in a lateral electric field, whereas in TN panels they untwist when voltage is applied, and their alignment alters as they drift from the anchored electrode. This hinders the flow of the bulb light and the contrast and colour representation as you look at the screen from wider angles than head-on. IPS vs. TN IPS panels are capable of true 1000:1 contrast ratio: that's the difference between the whitest white and darkest black to you and me. TN panels often boast a 'dynamic contrast ratio' of 8000:1, which is much higher than an IPS screen, but that doesn't mean the contrast's eight times better; in fact it's worse. As TN screens change from deep dark colours to bright whites, the contrast adjusts automatically, temporarily changing the contrast setting to allow the deeper colours through. The result is an often irritating visible colour adjustment that grates and has anyone of rightmind and seeing-eye reaching to turn it off. Ready… draw! After dragging TN panels through the mud, it's worth highlighting their advantages.First, they are a lot cheaper to produce because they require half the transistors per pixel that an IPS screen requires. Second, they produce much quicker response times; 2ms isn't an unusual figure for a good TN screen, while IPS panels struggle to get under 8ms. Is it worth paying more for all the IPS niceties then? When they come in a package like this Dell U2412M, absolutely. The screen and panel look very similar to Dell's flagship U3011H 30-inch screen, and like the £1,000 model, this U2412M is vertically adjustable and can be flipped to portrait orientation. The depth of blacks and brightness of whites onscreen is instantly noticeable, and as we put the U2412M through it's paces using some high-colour HD video, it didn't disappoint, rendering the full 16.7 million colours of the RGB spectrum. There are also a good range of menu options, such as clock and phase that we don't often see in affordable panels, though the U2412 didn't automatically adjust its orientation as we flipped it from landscape to portrait. As for an IPS's Achilles heel: response time, yes it's noticeable through rigorous benchmarking, but you won't notice the difference to a TN's response while you're gaming. That makes the U2412M a winner. It's a well-built, affordable and adjustable IPS panel.Follow TechRadar Reviews on Twitter: http://twitter.com/techradarreview

DellU2412M
Unfortunately, the differences between the Dell U2412M and the U2410 are all too visible. Dell was hoping to make a good value for money monitor, but has ended up producing a rather average product with an off-putting price tag.
With no HDMI input or loudspeakers, it's hard to use the U2412M for watching TV, or with a DVD player or games console. This is a monitor that you should only choose if you only want to use it as a desktop monitor and not as an extra display for other devices or as an extra TV.

After Apple?s hoo-ha about the Thunderbolt port on its newest Macs and MacBook Pros, it?s great to finally have something to plug into it. But I began testing this monitor with tainted expectations: less ?OK show me what you can do? and more ?oh lordy, yet another locked-in connectivity standard?.

Apple Thunderbolt Display 27"

The P221W offers accurate representation of colors, blacks, and whites, and a wide viewing angle for professional artists and photographers. Its bulkiness and high cost will not make it attractive to the average user, however.
Designed for professional designers and photographers, the $499 NEC MultiSync P221W offers a wide viewing angle and great color representation and passed all of our lab testing with flying colors. And while its super patterned-ITO vertical alignment (S-PVA) technology makes it slow and bulky, and the monitor takes up more room on the desktop than other screens of its size, it does offer remarkable adjustability. The P221W comes fully assembled, so there is very little time between unboxing and using. It is extremely bulky, though?the screen alone is 3.5 inches thick thanks to its S-PVA technology. S-PVA LCD technology offers better display of blacks and colors and wider viewing angles, albeit at a higher price than the more common, twisted-nematic technology. Also, S-PVA screens usually have slower pixel-response times and trouble with input lag, meaning that they aren?t great for fast-paced gaming. If you?re considering the P221W, don?t do it for the connectivity, because it offers very little. It has no HDMI, USB, or DisplayPort connectors. There are, however, DVI and VGA connectors. It does not have built-in speakers, but an optional soundbar is available. Adjustability is definitely a key component to the P221W. With very little effort on behalf of the user, it tilts, rotates, pivots, and is height-adjustable. There?s basically no way you can?t adjust this monitor. The controls are located on the bottom-right side of the bezel (or the bottom left if you have the screen turned vertically). There is a power button, a blue power-on indicator light, a dedicated button for selecting input and menu, and two sets of arrow buttons, one left/right rocker and one up/down rocker, which switch directions depending on how you have the screen turned. There is also an unlabeled black button that lets you change the menu display from vertical to horizontal. It also features an ambient light sensor that will change the brightness of the screen based on the lighting environment it is in. Since this is a screen designed for artists and photographers, it includes many features to ensure accurate color representation and an impressively wide, 178-degree viewing angle. Its internal 10-bit programmable lookup table, which stores correspondences between the input signal and the signal that must be sent to the matrix to achieve the necessary color, allow the display of 16.7 million colors. And, according to NEC, it achieves 96 percent coverage of Adobe RGB. And NEC isn?t just boasting with these specs. In our DisplayMate testing, the P221W excelled at every challenge we gave it. In the White-Level Saturation test, it scored higher than any monitor we have seen in a while, proving it excels at displaying whites. It also displayed darker grays, blacks, and color with supreme accuracy, no surprise for a monitor of this price. Also no surprise was how easy playing Doom 3 was with this screen, considering how well it displays blacks and darker grays. Its S-PVA matrix, though, means this display isn?t the best choice for fast-paced gaming. Thanks to its 8-millisecond pixel response time, it performed well on our DVD movie test using The Bourne Identity. There are cheaper screens out there, though, that offer faster pixel-response times, so we don?t recommend this screen specifically for viewing movies. Compared with other LCDs in this class, the P221W is an admirable performer. It displays the higher end of the gray scale better than the HP LP2275w, which has a comparable price (although the LP2275w does offer four USB ports). For those who are looking for a screen of about this size and aren?t concerned about perfect color representation, we recommend the Asus VH222H, which performs well, offers much more connectivity, and costs hundreds of dollars less. For artists and photographers who need a screen that is bright and runs the color gamut, and don?t mind paying for it, the P221W should be firmly in the running. Its high cost and bulky design make it impractical for everyday users, though, who could pick up a screen this size for much less.

NEC MultiSync P221W - 22in widescreen LCD
Make no mistake, this monitor has a lot going for it. If impeccable colour accuracy is your bag, then the P221W's cutting edge S-PVA panel and quality electronics make for a great choice. And yet even in isolation it remains awfully hard to justify at £425. Making matters worse, HP has also recently released a 22-inch monitor based on the latest Samsung S-PVA panel, the LP2275W. In many regards, it's a dead ringer for the P221W save for the absence of a programmable look-up table. But it sells for under £300. We have a review of the HP coming soon, so at the very least we'd recommend you peruse that before plumping for the NEC. However, one potentially deal-breaking niggle both the NEC and HP share is pixel density. In recent months, we've become accustomed to the generous virtual elbow room and visual sharpness that comes with the full-HD 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. It's now a standard feature on many 22-inch TN monitors available for under £150. It would be pretty galling to pay over £400 for significantly fewer PVA-powered pixels. In that context and in order to justify its almost punitive pricing, what this monitor really needs is a 1,920 x 1,200 native resolution and a 16:10 aspect. Sadly, therefore, the quest for the perfect 22 incher continues.
We've been looking for the perfect 22-inch monitor for quite some time now, but we haven't had...

NEC MultiSync P221w
Still, unless, perhaps, you're a graphics specialist, the £450 seems a high price to pay for the NEC MultiSync P221w, even for rock-solid image quality and high-level controls. These days you can find a decent 22in widescreen for half that price and less, and during these uncertain economic times, it makes sense to watch where you spend your hard-earned cash.
The NEC MultiSync P221w is an attractive, well-designed 22in widescreen monitor that offers impeccable image quality.

IiyamaProLite B2776HDS
The Iiyama ProLite B2776HDS is a 27'' monitor with plenty of points in its favour: it's responsive, reproduces colours accurately and has a great stand. It only misses out on a five-star rating by not having better contrast or a more flexible stand.
With the default settings, upscaling of SD sources is poor quality and the picture flickers a lot. The good news is that you can get rid of much of the snowstorm effort by turning the brightness down as far as you can. Don't bother trying the Cinema mode, though, which adds a strong blue tinge to the colours. The bad news is that not much else can be done about the quality of the upscaling, apart from leaving the job to an external device which can then provide the B2776HDS with a native 1080p signal.

HPZR24w
As long as you're not planning on using the HP ZR24w as a replacement TV, for video games or with a console, then it's a great desktop monitor that combines wide viewing angles, great hardware and accurate colour reproduction.
On paper, DisplayPort is a better choice than HDMI. While both standards can carry video, the former has much more bandwidth (21.6 Gbps) than its rival (10.2 Gbps). If you keep the resolution the same, a DisplayPort connection can exploit the extra room to increase the refresh rate. But in practical terms, most manufacturers prefer HDMI over DisplayPort. An awful lot of video sources now come with a HDMI output. DVD and Blu-ray players, as well as games consoles and lots of laptops now all have HDMI ports. DisplayPort connections are only available on a few graphics cards and a handful of laptops. Apple uses the connection for the MacBook, the MacBook Pro and the iMac, but still requires an adaptor to convert the mini-DisplayPort they use to a full-size version.

HP ZR24w
Great build, great image quality and a 16:10 ratio panel - HP's ZR24w will win many friends

HP ZR24W
HP ZR24W is attractive because of its IPS panel and very low price. It's cheaper than Eizo EV233WH and Dell U2410 (at least here in Denmark), and priced similar to the NEC EA231WMi. ZR24W is definitely a good monitor but it also has some disadvantages. The build quality is fair and the ergonomic functions are very good with height, tilt, swivel and pivot. The setting options are far from as comprehensive as dedicated graphic monitors but good enough for most discerning users.Picture quality has a lot of positive elements and the sRGB mode is quite good, because of good factory settings. Color reproduction in practice is impressive as well but a tad below Dell U2410.Response time is fast and input lag is very low making the ZR24W is suited for most gaming and movie watching. Black depth is not convincing on ZR24W, however. After calibration I measured 0.29 cd/m2 and this is worse than on the other new IPS based monitors from competitors such as Dell and NEC. Shadow detailing is good and viewing angles too. The high resolution in 16:10 aspect ratio is also a nice addition.
HP has released their new ZR series that replaces the LP series. The new ZR24W is the 24-inch variant but this year both the 22-inch and 24-inch comes with an IPS panel...

HP ZR24W
