Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic
If the iPhone has an Achilles' heel when it comes to music and movie playback, it's that the stock earbuds don't really do either justice. They're too reedy and harsh for that. It makes sense then to upgrade the standard cans as quickly as possible, which is where the Apple in-ear earphone with remotes and mic come in.For £54, these cans replace the standard earphones with a shaped design equipped with silicone sleeves in small, medium and large sizes, that fit more snugly into your ear. This has two benefits - it cuts down on ambient noise, enabling you to listen at lower volumes; and gives your iPhone a substantial boost in sound quality to boot.As you'd expect from the name, the Apple in-ear earphones with remote and mic also include a small inline controller with -/+ volume controls plus a simple switch that enables you play or pause a track, with two clicks skipping to the next track.Pressing the remote quickly three times sends you to the previous track. A microphone for hands-free calling is also built into the same housing.Fire up some tunes and the Apple in-ear earphones with remote and mic certainly live up to their promise - you're rewarded with substantially better quality than the standard buds with a crisp, clear treble and a realistic presentation of voices and instruments. With a frequency response of 5Hz (low-frequency) to 21kHz (high frequency), the Apple in-ear earphones are unlikely to please deep bass fiends, and boosting the bass using the iPhone's EQ settings simply results in plenty of audible distortion. You also have to be careful not to push the Apple in-ear earphones too far in your ear. It's easy to do because the silicon sleeves and the lightweight design of the earphones makes it feel as if they're about to fall out. Stick them in too deep and the result is woolly, closed-in sound with distorted bass, although you soon get used to getting the balance between a snug fit and clean sound right. The only real problem you will encounter is with the inline remote. It's placed high up on the right ear cable which ensures you can't really see it by looking down, forcing you to switch tracks and tweak the volume by feel - something that's not particularly easy thanks to a lack of tactile feedback.Maybe that's just as well. The inline remote's volume controls plainly don't work with the iPhone, forcing you to use its physical or touchscreen buttons instead. That's ironic given that many buyers on the UK Apple Store are specifically buying these cans as an iPhone upgrade, even if Apple doesn't go out of its way to list them.Officially Apple says the cans' remote and mic "are only supported by the iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (120GB) and iPod touch (2nd generation)", almost none of which have use a microphone. At least the microphone does work on the iPhone, but that still makes these cans a big of a curate's egg as far as upgrades go.There are some neat touches however. The Apple in-ear headphones with remote and mic come bundled with a triangular case for storing the cans when not in use. They also have a large pill-shaped carrying case for the other silicon sleeves, with one end for large sleeves and the other for small. It's weird though that Apple has paid attention to small details like this, while missing out offering a better inline remote. The Apple in-ear earphones with remote and mic then are a bit hit-and-miss. They're a worthy upgrade if you're stuck with standard iPhone cans, but only as long as you don't mind that the inline volume controls don't work. Luckily Apple lists plenty of fully-functioning alternatives on its UK Store. It's just such a shame it can't offer a simple fix itself.

Sennheiser RS4200
The lightweight RS 4200 headphones have been designed first and foremost for TV watching to enable you to turn up the volume without disturbing others, but they could also be used with a hi-fi. And because the set is wireless you can move around without tripping over any cables, while the signal travels through walls, ceilings and even outdoors to a range of up to 100m. The headphones are easy to use from the box, and they even have colour-coded cables and ports to make the whole procedure completely idiot-proof. Unusual designTheir unusual shape is designed to be more comfortable than the traditional 'over-the-head' style, particularly for glasses wearers. No doubt it's down to personal preference, but we found them extremely uncomfortable, particularly for prolonged periods. Once in operation, the receiver found the correct signal straight away, but if this doesn't happen (if other transmitters are operating simultaneously) you can use the channel selector switch to manually locate the correct one. The headphones provide excellent sound quality with no hiss or interference and clearly defined speech. They cope equally well with big movie soundtracks, offering a clear sound with some impressively meaty bass. The lithium battery takes about 3hr to charge with the headphones docked in the transmitter.

Hi-Fi Choice Issue 324: Sennheiser HD800
Sennheiser's strongest suit of late has been upper-midrange headphones including the award-winning HD650, at around £300, which are a popular choice with audiophiles and professionals alike, and now Sennheiser have released the HD800 priced at a whopping £1000. Read TechRadar's Sennheiser HD650 reviewIt's taken us a while to get hold of a review sample, not least because demand worldwide has so far outstripped Sennheiser's ability to supply, but here we are at last with a pair of these rarified beasts. So what's all the fuss about?First and foremost it's the new driver included in the headphone. A headphone drive unit is typically like a loudspeaker driver in that a flat or slightly conical diaphragm is propelled by a few turns of wire in a magnetic field. In this case, however, the driver diaphragm is actually an annulus, or flat doughnut shape. Sennheiser calls it a 'Ring Driver' and explains that it has a significant advantage over a circular diaphragm, in that it doesn't resonate in the same way at high frequencies.RESONANCE: The Sennheiser HD800's unusual driver diaphragm is a big part of its impressive soundHeadphone drivers suffer from the same compromise as loudspeaker ones regarding size. Bigger is better for bass but leads to resonance problems in the treble. The Ring Driver is 56mm in diameter, larger (by a couple of mm) than any other headphone driver in current production, but is claimed to have a much greater resistance to resonance. Sennheiser doesn't go into detail on this, but speaker designers have long understood that the centre of a circular driver is a problem point as energy arrives there from all directions and has nowhere to go: the result is not only resonance but uncontrolled, chaotic, behaviour that can have nasty effects on audio. Dealing with this is a black art in both headphone and speaker (especially dome tweeter) design.Having neatly sidestepped that issue, Sennheiser has employed various measures to ensure that nothing else in the HD800's design lets the performance down. Construction is based on high-performance plastics which we would have sworn were metal, but no – metals would have been too inclined to resonate and colour the sound, so ultra-hard polymers were used instead. Cabling uses four cores of high-purity copper with Teflon insulation and the outer insulation and braiding of the cable have been carefully chosen to minimise mechanical noise-coupling up the wire. Even the headband has been designed against resonance, using both metal and plastics, well-padded, of course, for comfort. The ear cups are also luxuriously padded and every part of the HD800 is designed to resist resonance and rattling.PERFECT FIT: These parts come together to form a spectacular wholeThere's one more feature that deserves mention. The Ring Driver, with its large size, produces a good approach to a planar wavefront which seems to the ear to have travelled from afar, aiding sound naturalness. Sennheiser has angled the driver so that the sound appears to come from slightly in front of the head. The precise acoustics of headphone coupling is a tricky subject, but this is an ingenious approach to ensuring a flat and realistic frequency balance. Sound qualityWe've had plenty of exposure to high-grade headphones over the last couple of years, so expectations were high for this newcomer. We were not in any sense disappointed, for this is certainly one of the most revealing bits of audio kit it has been our pleasure to encounter.
