Denon has plenty of headphones currently on offer: the AH-D5000 is the range-topper. It's a closed-back model with earcups made of natural wood – the Japanese love natural wood, of course, but apart from its decorative properties it is quite a useful material from an acoustical point of view. Inside the wood are the drive units, which use a microfibre material to counteract diaphragm resonance. Sensitivity is quite high, aided by the unusually low impedance of 25 ohms – we didn't find anything that had trouble driving it, at least at normal listening levels.Comfortable headphoneThe earpads are covered in leather making this another comfortable headphone suited to long listening spells. Spring force from the headband is quite gentle and pressure on the top of the head is also modest. The cable is on the thick side, but not too instrusive, and its nylon braid covering does not generate too much friction noise. It uses high-purity copper wire, though in common with most headphone makers, Denon does not say whether the ground wire is common to each channel or separated right behind the jack plug (headphone diehards will soon tell you that the latter sounds better in a far more obvious way than the purity of the copper in the wire).As a closed-back model, this naturally cuts out a fair bit of external noise. That can lead to a rather unnatural effect, but it's worth noting that Denon seems to have achieved an unusually frequency-independent attenuation of outside noise, which improves the situation considerably. Heavy on bassHistorically, closed-back headphones have tended to be less neutral in their balance than open models, but it doesn't have to be that way and Denon seems to have proved the point pretty conclusively here. Although the tonality of the D5000 is not completely beyond reproach, it is absolutely on the same general level as many of the competition. There is a little subjective lift in the treble (actually we can't think off-hand of a single Japanese headphone we've heard that doesn't have at least a hint of treble prominence), but otherwise the balance is mostly very even.That said, the bass seems a little heavy. It's not exactly that it is boosted, but when there is a lot happening at low frequencies it seems slightly plodding and inclined to distract from higher-frequency goings-on. When the bass is simple, things are happier and we thoroughly enjoyed that old audiophile staple of the 'walking' plucked double-bass line, which invariably seemed full-bodied without excess, tuneful and immaculately timed. It's in dense orchestration and handfuls of low piano chords, that the problems seem to arise.Classical tastesThere is a good deal of detail on offer, too, with clear differentiation of instruments and pretty good stereo imaging. We felt that the Beyer model slightly had the edge in this last department, but Denon gives good lateral definition and about as much depth as one ever gets from headphones. Voices, as often happens with headphones, show a trace of coloration on consonants, but are very well served in the vowels and remain distinctive in both speech and song. There seems to be no strong musical preference with the Denon AH-D5000, but we felt that classical styles seem to be just a little better suited to this headphone's very civilised presentation. There's no fear of a little roughness now and again, though!

A stunningly beautiful pair of headphones that produce an equally beautiful sound. Although you may need to sell a vital organ to afford them, they'll reward you with amazing reproductions of your music collection. Do them a favour, though, and don't feed them rubbishy MP3s
Quite simply, the Denon AH-D5000 blew us away. Although they are encased in mahogany, this set of cans is surprisingly light. More importantly, listening to music through these headphones is like an orgy for your ears, but are you ready for this calibre of sound?

Denon may not be the first name one would think of in the context of high-end headphones, but it has five models on offer at present, plus three in-ear designs.This particular contender is an all-new model and sits one rung down from the range-topping (and more expensive) AH-D5000.Sound isolationLike the D5000, the D2000 is a closed-back model, the main advantage being the degree of isolation from exterior sounds.A few closed-back models we've tested recently had next to no attenuation of outside noise, but while the D2000 is hardly in the 'sensory deprivation' league, it does (thanks to its close-fitting ear cups) cut out a good deal of peripheral interference.It's also comfortable to wear, with soft padding on both cups and a spring-forced headband that's nicely balanced between security and a vice-like grip.Well-made headphonesNaturally, a major contributor to the sound of any headphone is its drive units and Denon has apparently used some form of microfibre composite for the membranes, with a voice coil driven by a neodymium magnet.Something called an 'Acoustic Optimizer' helps maintain a neutral balance (closed-back headphones can be at a disadvantage because of the enclosed space behind the diaphragms). The driver housings are usefully non-resonant, too.Lots of little touches complete what is a very upmarket-looking package. The cable is made of high-purity copper and is sheathed in a business-like braid, although the noise it makes when rubbing against clothing is a bit disconcerting. At the end of the cable is a 3.5mm jack plug, a top-quality metal item with a screw-in quarter-inch adapter.Satisfying sound qualityHaving just mentioned that warning note about coloration from closed-back cans, we are delighted to report that this model seems almost entirely free from any such effect. It is, in fact, one of the most neutral closed headphones we can recall: possibly the most neutral, standing comparison on tonal grounds with the best open-back models.The only slight blemish on its tonal character is a hint of shyness in the upper midrange and lower treble. So many transducers, especially loudspeakers, have something of a peak in that region and we thought (at first) that the D2000 was unusually honest, but careful listening to recordings of familiar sounds (including speaking voice, a very searching test of headphone tonality) confirmed that there is a small dip in the response.Very high treble, however, is superbly open and extended, while lower frequencies are also very well served. Bass is completely effortless, but very powerful when required.The result giving an unusually satisfying feel for the visceral impact of percussion (even though it's one area where headphones must inevitably bow to the superiority of speakers).Deep and detailed audioDetail is another area in which this headphone scores very highly (with just a touch less insight than we've heard from the very best open-back models). The real glory of the D2000, though, is its imaging.This is a bit of an odd one as headphone imaging works differently from loudspeakers and results can certainly be expected to vary from those heard via speakers, although this works very well indeed.Instruments are clearly defined spatially, with good lateral placement and excellent depth. This, without doubt, is due to the high levels of detail and low levels of resonance in the D2000, which allows sounds to project clearly from their place of origin.Headphone listening isn't for everyone, but models like this can only help widen its appeal. If you're already a convert, you'll need little persuasion of the virtues inherent in this model once you've heard it!

Test-Fazit: Was Denon hier auf die Beine gestellt hat, ist mehr als beeindruckend. Der aufgerufene Preis mag manch einen Kopfhörerfreund ? je nach Geldbeutel ? vielleicht etwas abschrecken, aber es gibt eine klare Rechtfertigung. Der AH-D7000 ist ein äußerst fein zeichnender Kopfhörer mit einer Bühnenpräsentation, die sicher viele Anhänger finden wird. Ich denke, die Umgewöhnung von Lautsprecher auf Kopfhörer wird mit dem Denon AH-D7000 wesentlich einfacher fallen als mit vielen anderen Kopfhörern. Außerdem gehört der 7000er zu den wenigen, die in der Lage sind, die ganz tiefen Töne überzeugend ans Ohr zu bringen. Wer eine Alternative zum Lautsprecherhören sucht, die entspanntes Hören auf höchstem Niveau möglich werden lässt, sollte sich den Denon AH-D7000 auf die Probehörliste setzen.
Dieser Kopfhörer verströmt Luxus – optisch wie haptisch. Klanglich überzeugte der Denon AH-D7000 im Test nicht zuletzt aufgrund seiner Feinzeichnung, Bühnenabbildung und Tiefbassqualität. Ein Kopfhörer, an den sich wohl auch Lautsprecherhörer recht schnell gewöhnen werden.

My first ?high end? system consisted of Sennheiser HD-580 headphones, an original HeadRoom headphone amplifier, an Audio Alchemy DAC in the Box, and a Sony Discman with an optical digital out. I was a college student at the time, and there was no way of having a real, properly set up hifi system in my dorm room. It was clear to me at the time, listening to both my system and uber high end Hifi in shops, that my little headphone setup blew away many high dollar loudspeaker based systems.

I think just about anyone would enjoy the Denon AH-C560R - its audio detail is good without brightness or harshness, and the overall balance is good enough that the slight emphasis on lower frequencies won't offend most listeners. If you're in the market for a great headset with a three button remote, but you're not quite sure what sort of sound you're looking for, the AH-C560R is a good, safe choice that's easy to recommend.

Another range-topper, the Denon AH-C751 has a metal body and is supplied with three sizes of earpiece. The cable exits from the side of the cylindrical body and we had some trouble finding the right angle at which to insert the 'phones into the ear so that they sat securely and the lead did not tend to pull them out. Technical characteristics are typical, with a 16-Ohm impedance and power handling of 250mW which, even with the slightly below-average sensitivity that we experienced, would fairly take anyone's head off. An unusually short cable is fitted, terminated in a very nice metal-bodied plug: an extension cable is also provided, along with a very nice hard carry case. No one transducer is ever going to please all tastes, so it's good to report that this model has distinctively different sound from a lot of others.Awesome bassMost immediately noticeable is the bass, which is strong and full, perhaps too much so for some listeners though we're sure it will bring a smile to many faces. Treble is quite lively though not unpleasantly bright, while the midrange seems generally neutral. If we've a slight concern about the sound then it's in regard to detail, which seems to lag a little behind. It's not quite so easy to hear right into a mix and imaging is less precise too, though in making that comparison we are applying very high standards. Anyone coming to the C751 from cheap giveaway 'phones is likely to be shocked at the amount of detail on offer. The sound is generally very impressive. If the thought of killer bass doesn't put you right off, there is a lot to enjoy from this model.

Denon AH-C751 sound-isolating earphones
A great follow-up to the AH-C700s, the AH-C751s offer a slightly punchier mid-range without taking anything from the lows or highs. Compared to Shure's similarly priced SE420 s, they offer a cleaner sound, with better emphasis on high-end detail, although the SE420s are arguably a little more comfortable. If you want a slightly rawer, meatier sound, do consider the SE420s -- with twin drivers in each ear, they're capable of giving you more impact, though you'll sacrifice the absolute crystalline clarity of the C751's treble and bass. The Denon AH-C751s are a stonking good pair of earphones. Like their predecessors, they produce beautiful highs and smooth, deep bass, and mids with even more punch. While they're too heavy for the gym, their sound-isolating qualities make them perfect for your commute
