Whenever we plug in a new headset to review here on TechRadar, we inevitably end up using Sennheiser's PC 350 or PC 161 as one of the key comparisons for what a high-end set of headphones designed for gaming should sound like. This much-loved pair are getting on a bit now, though, and a complete range refresh from Sennheiser just arrived in the office. Will our well-used reference kit finally get put to one side?The PC 333D isn't a direct replacement for the PC 350 – for that you'll want the more costly PC 360s – but it is priced more or less identically to the outgoing favourites. It's a lighter-weight kit, with smaller drivers and a more plasticky feel.While the build quality may not feel quite like a £100 headset, it's tough and there are a few features designed specifically for gaming. The volume control is built into the right-hand earpiece for quick access, for example, and the mic mutes itself when you push the boom up.The most impressive part of the whole package is, as it should be, the audio characteristics of the speakers themselves. A massive 14 – 22,000Hz frequency range suggests that this is no ordinary set of cans.

Silky smooth, detailed sound leans warm, but lets highs pop and creates a vivid stage. Listening is enhanced dramatically by velvet-covered cans, which you won?t want to take off?maybe ever. And the white and chrome body matches the iPod, to boot; a genuine leather band up top adds old-school class. They?re too large to carry around, but for in-home listening with an iPod or stereo, this is our top pick. Though the purpose of this review was more to build a bank of headphones to compare open-backed cans to compare to in the future, theAKGK701 introduced in 2007 are still impressive to this day. With a great frequency response, extremely comfortable wear and open soundstage, these are a good entry to mid-level pickup for those who are fans of an analytical sound. Though these headphones have more or less been re-born through re-branding as theAKGQ701s, the addition of flashy colors and a new title haven?t changed their good performance. They aren?t meant to go outside with, but audio nerds chained to their desks will love these headphones.
TheAKGK701s are a mid-range set of cans that see wide use in the DJ and mixer community. With a flat frequency response and wide open soundstage, it?s not hard to see why. Though these cans aren?t as good as studio monitor speakers, they will work in a pinch and not do the same to your head. All-around great cans.

Overall, we were slightly disappointed with the Shure SE115s. The big caveat here is that our tastes lean towards having more detail rather than huge bass (of course, if you can have both, that's even better). And with the sub-£100 section of the market literally bristling with different options, it can be hard to work out what to buy.After all – everyone knows that the tacky little white earbuds that come with iPods are unrivalled in their awfulness. But how do you know that any new ones are going to be any better?Well, as a rule of thumb, the earphone market is a perfect example of that old adage: you get what you pay for - the more you spend, the better the earphones will be.How much should you spend?So the only real problem is: how much should you spend, and will you really notice the difference between these Shure SE115's and their much more expensive brothers and sisters?We're pleased to report that for the recommended retail price of £99, the SE115 earphones offer a pitch-perfect balance between price and performance. We're even more pleased to tell you that on most online retailers you can pick these up now for less than £70.It may seem like a lot to spend on earphones, but you will absolutely notice the difference between these buds and their cheaper challengers, both lower down in the Shure range and from rival manufacturers.At the same time, unless you're a particularly picky audiophile with super-sonic hearing, you're unlikely to pick up any noticeable differences between these and its much more expensive rivals.The top of the range Shure earphones fly well above the £300 mark, which is completely unnecessary for anyone using earphones with compressed audio files – especially in these money crunchy times.So ok, we've established that the Shure SE115's sit at the right place in the market. The problem is that there are plenty other very similar products that offer similar performance at the same price. Do they have this? The answer is a bit of yes, and a bit of no.They're certainly very well put together, and the dynamic drivers inside the buds offer a powerful, rich and smooth sound that put those bundled iPod earphones to shame in dramatic fashion.However, while they sound fantastic – and make no mistake about it they really do sound great – they're certainly not streets ahead of rival manufacturers.And when you bear in mind that many products in the same price sector offer extras such as built in microphone for answering phone calls, it's hard to absolutely justify buying the Shure SE115's over, say, the Atomic Floyd HiDefDrums or a pair of Sennheisers.You also need to consider comfort. The noise isolation offered by these and other Shure earphones, is possibly the best on the market. But they can also be a somewhat traumatic experience for your ears.If you don't like stuffing fairly hefty padded ear buds in your ear canal, the default buds are not for you. However, if you don't mind that kind of thing, you'll find yourself immersed in sound in a way that cheaper earphones simply can't manage.Luckily, the earphones come with five sets of replacement buds, some are made of the patented dense foam that mould themselves to your ears, and others are silicon rubber which don't offer the same level of noise isolation but they're easier on small, sensitive ears.Available in four colours, the Shure SE115s do offer fantastic audio performance for the price. And for £99 we would have recommended you be wary before buying them - to make sure they were right for you. But for around £66 and falling, these are a steal.

Skullcandy handlar mycket om design, ofta mer om design än ljudkvalitet. Det är heller inte en design som passar alla, utan för de som gärna vill sticka ut med färgkombinationer som gold-red eller gold-foil-rasta.. Tyvärr faller Smoking buds på ljudkvaliteten. Ljudbilden låter inte alls välbalanserad. Både mellanregistret och basen tar för mycket plats vilket leder till att musiken blir otydlig. Ljudet är relativt brusfritt vilket inte alltid är fallet på hörlurar i samma prisklass.. Ett litet plus för volymkontrollen på sladden. Hörlurarna känns bekväma i öronen och det ingår flera öronkuddar så chansen är stor att du hittar en storlek som passar just dig.. Hellre snygg än välljudande. Skullcandys hörlurar är svårdrivna och du måste höja volymen rejält för att öka ljudnivån i hörlurarna. Smoking buds har hängt med ett par år nu och det har blivit hög tid att uppdatera modellen. Förhoppningsvis är en förbättring av ljudet högst upp på listan..
Snygga lurar i exotiska färgkombinationer är vad Smoking buds erbjuder. Tyvärr står inte bra ljud med på menyn. »
