It has all the basic functionality needed in a cell phone and also has the ability to do SMS and MMS and to attach to Bluetooth headphones. It even has an FM radio.. With hearing-aid compatibility, a large easy-to-see keypad, excellent volume, and an AARP discount, it is perfect for seniors. We recently aimed our critical eyes at the Doro PhoneEasy 409gsm , an ultra-simple mobile designed with the elderly and hard of hearing in mind. This is the PhoneEasy 410gsm, a similar mobile from Doro that adds a few extra features here and there. At a pay as you go price of £100, it's a little more expensive than the 409, so is there any reason to prefer this mobile over the cheaper model? It's also available for free on a £15-per-month, 24-month contract, or SIM-free for around £120. Mathemagic Our keen techno-mathematical minds tell us the Doro 410 is approximately one better than the 409. As such, we expect a few extra touches. Cosmetically, this clamshell phone shares some of the downsides that plagued the 409, notably a bulky, plasticky frame. This phone is pleasingly light, however, weighing an extremely dainty 99g, so it won't weigh you down when you're out and about. The 410 comes in three colours -- red, black and white. Our version is the red model, which we have to say looks really sharp thanks to the slight gloss Doro has applied. The 409 is only available in black and, for this reason, we reckon the 410 scores higher on a purely aesthetic level. Flipping the 410 open, you'll see an alphanumeric keypad with those extra-large buttons the PhoneEasy range is known for. These are big and comfy enough that they shouldn't put any strain on your hands or eyes. After years of using phones with teeny-tiny buttons or impossible touchscreen keyboards, these oversized buttons will come as a huge relief. Disappointingly, the display is no bigger than that on the 409. With such a vast amount of space to play with, a 50.8mm (2-inch) display seems a little on the small side, and perhaps not ideal for those who aren't 100 per cent in the eyesight department. Still, with a 176x220-pixel resolution, everything on this screen looks clear, with no annoying blurring around the text or icons. The Doro PhoneEasy 410gsm doubles as a mobile phone and a personal security system, with an emergency button on the rear of the handset. On the back of the 410, there's a great big emergency button. When pressed, the phone sounds a noisy alarm for a few seconds, then sends a pre-defined text message to up to five different numbers. It then proceeds to call those numbers one by one until somebody answers -- potentially an extremely useful feature. If you hit the button by accident, you do have until the end of the alarm to cancel the emergency. The 410 also has a hearing-aid-compatibility rating of M3/T4, which means its speakers will work better with hearing aids than most other mobiles. Navigation for the nation Navigating the menus is very simple. Scrolling with the up and down arrow, you'll cycle through all the various options and sections. There are two extra buttons on the top of the keypad that basically serve as 'accept' and 'back' commands. In terms of features, the 410 is almost as sparse as the 409 -- don't expect any multimedia or Web browsing here. There's no camera , either. Instead, you're relegated to basic tasks like texting or making calls. The 410 does have the ability to send and receive MMS messages, however, which is something missing from the 409. There are a couple of other extras on board, too. An FM radio can be accessed via the main menu. We're in two minds about this feature. On the one hand, it's very simple: you just plug in the supplied 2.5mm headphones and scroll up and down until you hit the frequency you're after. You can save particular stations as favourites and access them quickly with the number keys. It's basic, but it's easy. A built-in FM radio offers one point of difference to the PhoneEasy 409, and follows the same simple formula in terms of functionality. The thing we like about the PhoneEasy range is it offers stripped-back, pared-down mobiles with no frills. Each new feature risks clogging up the menu with something that'll never get used, and only serves to confuse potentially tech-wary users. If you think you (or the person you're buying for) would get some mileage out of the FM radio, the 410 is preferable to the radio-shy 409. On the other hand, if you think it'll only get in the way of the basic functions you want the phone for, opt for the simpler 409. We feel the same way about the simplistic top-down shooter and platform games on offer -- UFO and Robot . They're fun, but if you don't think you'll ever use them, save yourself the confusion and buy the 409 instead. Conclusion We're fond of the Doro PhoneEasy 410gsm and its super-simple ethos. If you're after a really back-to-basics handset, though, the 409 is better still, offering the same emergency and hearing-aid-friendly features -- plus it's about £10 cheaper.
The Doro PhoneEasy 410gsm is a great basic mobile for the elderly and those who are less tech-inclined. But if you think this is as good as it gets, think again -- the Doro PhoneEasy 409gsm is simpler still.

Anyone on the hunt for a bleeding-edge smart phone rammed to the gills with the latest technological innovations might want to point their cursor elsewhere, because the Doro PhoneEasy 409gsm takes simplification to new extremes. Simple isn't bad however -- this mobile is aimed at the elderly, and it's designed to be as easy to use as humanly possible. At a cost of around £90, has Doro succeeded in its goal of making a truly accessible mobile? Exploring Doro Visually, the Doro 409 isn't too impressive. A bulky clamshell design measuring 98 by 50 by 19mm frames the 409, which is matte black all over apart from a strip of green plastic on the front and around the emergency button on the back. Basic functions call for basic design with the Doro PhoneEasy 409, which certainly doesn't take home any prizes for most-attractive mobile. While it's not particularly slender, this phone is light. It tips the scales at 110g, and it doesn't feel heavy at all. Two LEDS on the front of the handset will flash intermittently to let you know the battery is low, or that you have a new text message waiting. Flipping the phone open, the first thing you'll notice is the 409's absolutely massive buttons. You'll have a hard time missing your mark with this phone, so it's perfect if your eyesight's a little wobbly, or you find the tiny buttons on other mobiles too fiddly. Above the alphanumeric keypad, there are 'call' and 'call end' buttons, up and down arrow keys for cycling through menus and two more navigation buttons, primarily used as 'confirm' and 'back' keys. Small but mighty The 51mm (2-inch) screen is really quite small considering how much space is available, which is surely a missed opportunity. With a resolution of 176x220 pixels, it does look pretty sharp, and it's bright, too, which is somewhat redeeming. The menu system really couldn't be simpler. Bring up the menu by tapping the left button from the home screen, then scroll up and down using the arrow keys. Every icon is pleasingly chunky and the interface is extremely snappy and responsive. We'd expect nothing less -- with such low functionality and pared-down graphics, you'd be highly disappointed if you couldn't browse the phone's menus at a fair old lick. In terms of features, things are extremely sparse, with no camera , web browser or media player in sight. There is, however, a headphones socket on the right of the handset. Ultimately, this phone is for texting and calling only. One feature that does set this mobile apart, though, is the emergency button on the back. State of emergency Holding the emergency button for a few moments or tapping it twice in under a second (or three times in under a second -- an option you can select from the settings menu) will first sound a very loud alarm, then automatically send a text message to five different numbers. The call list and emergency message can be edited from the settings menu. Once all the messages are deployed, the 409 will start calling the numbers on the call list until someone answers. An emergency button on the back of the Doro PhoneEasy 409 is designed for easy access. Another feature is an extra-loud speaker for the hard of hearing. The 409 has a hearing aid compatibility rating of M3/T4, which means the sound output from this phone will be picked up by a hearing aid with increased clarity. If you're looking for a really simple phone, ordinarily we'd recommend picking up an old, reliable Nokia from the days when mobiles were drastically less complicated. The extra features of this phone, however, designed with the elderly in mind, certainly make the 409 a more attractive purchase if safety's your biggest consideration. Conclusion It ain't so pretty and it's certainly bereft of features, but, if you're looking for a phone built for the elderly or hard of hearing, the Dora PhoneEasy 409gsm is very simple to use, with well-implemented specialty features.
