Alcatel OT-706

Alcatel OT-980 review
The affordable Android market is fierce and sadly the Alcatel OT-980 is unable to hold its own
Empfehlung von Mobile Review vom 2010-11-26 00:00:00.0
First Look at Alcatel OT-980
Communication quality is on par with all modern GSM models. The speaker is loud and the microphone is sensitive enough for different types of environment. Courtesy of a dedicated speaker ringtones sound loud without squeaking. The vibro is decent for such a large model, but it could have been more powerful. Music playback via the headphones is standard for an Android smartphone and the majority of users will be satisfied, especially if you replace the headset from the box by something more respectable. The phone attracts as a low-cost Android smartphone with a QWERTY keypad as it has no rivals in the segment. The popularity of Alcatel OT-980 will depend on its price. In September the recommended price was $270, but due to delays the price tag was reduced to $230-250. To my mind the $230 will be the best option as it will be $30 more expensive than an inferior ??? 916 and $30 cheaper than LG GT540. This way OT-980 will be sandwiched between its main rivals to offer more choice for consumers. In some European countries the phone has already appeared in shops. In UK you can get it for free if you sign a 1 or 2 year contract.

Alcatel OT-980
Alcatel's latest effort comes with Android 2.1, a full Qwerty keyboard and a price tag that makes it one of the cheapest Android devices on the market right now. Unfortunately, the phone relies on irksome resistive-touchscreen technology, and comes with several quirks that thwart it from ousting its low-cost, Android-based rivals. The Alcatel OT-980 is available solely on pay as you go, and costs £99. Budget blowout With Android , BlackBerry, iPhone and Windows Phone 7 all scrapping relentlessly to carve up the biggest slice of the smart-phone pie, big-spending mobile users have an embarrassment of choice available to them. Out of all the key players, though, Google's Android is the only one attempting to offer its services to the lower end of the market. We've already seen devices such as the T-Mobile Pulse Mini and Orange San Francisco break through the sub-£100 barrier, and there's more competition on the way -- with Alcatel's OT-980 being one of the most notable rivals. A portrait-format slider with a full Qwerty keyboard, the OT-980's appearance calls to mind similar phones such as the Palm Pre and BlackBerry Torch . In reality, it's much chunkier than the Pre and lacks the reassuring build quality of the Torch, but when you consider it's pitched at the lower end of the market, such differences are easier to stomach. Slightly less welcome is the presence of a resistive touchscreen display. As the Android platform has developed and matured over the past couple of years, it has become more reliant on highly responsive capacitive technology, where no finger pressure is required. Gestures such as 'pinch to zoom' are now commonplace in many Android applications -- including the gallery viewer, Web browser and Google Maps -- but unfortunately, resistive screens cannot register more than one touch at a time, which makes such functionality impossible. My kingdom for a stylus Matters are made worse by the fact that the OT-980's display is often a real pig to use. Cycling through the various home screens and menus isn't an issue, but precise tapping is infuriatingly awkward. Opening hyperlinks contained within emails and Web pages is nigh-on impossible, and there were several moments when we had to resort to using a pen, or any other pointy implement that was close at hand. Lamentably, the OT-980 doesn't come with a stylus -- an item which really should be standard issue with resistive-screen handsets. The screen-related woes don't end there, either. With a resolution of 240x320 pixels, the 2.8-inch TFT display makes a real hash of rendering high-detail images. Where applicable, you'll need to configure your apps to display their text in a larger font, as small letters become ill-defined and almost unreadable. The screen also has a curiously washed-out look to it, and even when the backlight is at full blast, it lacks the vibrancy of the latest Super LCD and Super AMOLED handsets, like the HTC Desire Z and Samsung Galaxy S . The low resolution of the 2.8-inch screen causes problems on highly detailed Web pages. The disappointing nature of the resistive screen is mitigated slightly when you slide open the phone's Qwerty keyboard. Typing on the OT-980 is a breeze, despite the densely packed cluster of buttons. The only complaint we have is that, for some strange reason, several keys are incorrect -- pressing 'Q' actually types 'A', and 'Z' is 'W'. Although we tried tinkering with the keyboard configuration in the options menu, the problem remained. We can only assume this is a pre-production issue that will be rectified before the device goes on sale. Chunky monkey With its muscular dimensions and 152g weight, the OT-980 feels like a monster when compared to other devices. Despite its considerable heft, much of the phone is fashioned out of cheap plastic rather than metal. Although it's unlikely to capture any admiring glances when you reveal it in public, the OT-980 is at least comfortable to use. The rounded casing allows it to sit snugly in the palm, even when the keyboard is exposed. In terms of multimedia, the OT-980 falls a little short of what we're used to these days. 2 megapixels is all budding photographers have to play with, and the shots produced by the phone's camera leave something to be desired. Similarly, video recording is fuzzy and generally unimpressive. Thankfully, audio can be channelled through the 3.5mm socket into your favourite pair of headphones , and a microSD card slot allows you to boost storage capacity up to 32GB -- ample room for all your tunes, photos, apps and videos. Android 2.1, but not as we know it The OT-980 is sporting Android 2.1 -- better known by its dessert-related codename Eclair. A relatively modest 600MHz CPU beats at the heart of the phone -- which is quite a way behind the 1.2GHz monsters that are invading the smart phone arena these days -- but, surprisingly, the OT-980 is pretty nippy. Navigating between the various elements of the phone's user interface is smooth and painless, something which can't always be said of more powerful Android phones, like the Motorola Milestone XT720 . Things begin to slow down when you have several applications open simultaneously, but on the whole it's a slick experience, and one that is no doubt aided by the low resolution of the phone's screen. Strangely, many elements of the user interface are taken from Android 1.6 rather than 2.1. The video recorder and camera, for example, are treated as two different applications, whereas on the Motorola Droid and Nexus One --two of the first devices to come with 2.1 on board -- they're rolled into a single app. The application drawer is also based on the variant witnessed in Android 1.6. Clearly the underlying code is Eclair-based (it features animated live wallpapers, which were only made available in 2.1), but cosmetically, it feels as if it's stuck in the past. Despite rocking Android 2.1, the OT-980 features many of Android 1.6's user interface elements, including the old-fashioned application drawer. Because the OT-980 is running 2.1, you're granted access to the vast majority of applications available on the Android Market, including the near-indispensible Google Navigation. That said, Android's development is thundering forward at a frightening pace, and there are already some apps that require the 2.2 version of the OS -- otherwise known as Froyo. With Android 2.3 imminent, the OT-980 is already outdated. It's not the only Android handset to suffer from Google's relentless update process, but given its humble status, it's much less likely to see incremental software updates than other 2.1 devices. Conclusion Getting Android 2.1 to the market for under £100 is an achievement in itself, so coming down hard on the failings of the Alcatel OT-980 doesn't really seem very sporting. When compared to other phones in the same price range, the OT-980 is undeniably impressive. It's wise to remember that handsets like the HTC Desire and even its cheaper cousin, the HTC Wildfire, are considerably more expensive than Alcatel's effort. Place the OT-980 alongside feature phones like the Sony Ericsson Cedar or LG Town C300 , and it becomes a more appealing proposition. On the flip side, the OT-980 fares less well when placed alongside its budget Android rivals, such as the Orange San Francisco and Huawei Ideos -- both of which include capacitive touchscreens for the same sub-£100 price of Alcatel's contender.
With its unresponsive touchscreen and rather awkward appearance, the Alcatel OT-980 struggles to distinguish itself from similarly priced Android devices. If you're looking to upgrade from 'dumb phone' territory, the low price is undeniably attractive.

Alcatel OT-708
Without a complex operating system, speedy browser or humungous app reservoir, the Alcatel OT-708's touchscreen feels rather redundant. But that's not to say it's a bad device for the price, and we'd recommend it if you're a cash-strapped and undemanding touchscreen fetishist. Before splashing out, though, give the LG Cookie Fresh GS290 a goosey gander, as it's not much more expensive and offers a larger touch-sensitive display.
The OT-708 is one of the simplest touchscreen phones on the market, and also among the cheapest. If you're skint or want a cheap secondary handset, it's worth a look

Alcatel OT-990
The Alcatel OT-990 is a budget Android phone running version 2.2 of Google's popular operating system. It features a 5-megapixel camera and microSD storage expansion. The OT-990 is exclusively available for £100 from UK network provider O2 , on a pay as you go deal. Should I buy the Alcatel OT-990? Alcatel?s line of cheap and cheerful budget phones has always managed to stay on the right side of acceptable, and the OT-990 is no exception. For the asking price, it?s a decent enough proposition. The casing is surprisingly well-constructed, and it boasts a capacitive touchscreen as opposed to a cheaper resistive variant. As positive as all this sounds, there?s no escaping the fact that corners have been cut to achieve that £100 price tag. The OT-990?s touchscreen doesn?t respond as well as we?d like. And it?s running the slightly outdated Android 2.2 -- which is a little behind the times when you consider that rivals such as the Orange Monte Carlo and Huawei Blaze are pre-loaded with 2.3. Also, with the recent announcement of the next version of the Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich , you can reasonably expect low-cost Android 4.0 handsets to appear early in 2012 -- which will make the OT-990 seem even more archaic. Not so long ago, the OT-990 would have been a highly desirable device, but the game has changed in recent months. Budget Android phones are commonplace, with some rival handsets -- such as the bargain-basement Samsung Galaxy Europa -- selling for half the price of Alcatel?s challenger. If you?re purchasing this for a young relative or smart phone newcomer, then there?s little danger of them being disappointed. Despite its faults, the OT-990 is a competent enough product for the price. The only problem is that it?s up against some stern competition and doesn't do enough to really differentiate itself. Interface The Alcatel OT-990 comes furnished not with the latest version of Google's mobile operating system, but with version 2.2 -- also known as Froyo. It's not alone in this regard, with several other low-cost Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Fit and Mini , sporting the same iteration of the software. Android 2.2 has been left reasonably unmolested, but there are unique elements here and there. While die-hard Android fans will lament the lack of the 2.3 operating system, to the average person it will make very little impact. Froyo is a solid platform and boasts several cool features, such as the ability to save application data to your SD card, turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot and use attractive live wallpapers on your home screen. The data counter widget is a handy addition, allowing you to keep an eye on Web traffic. Alcatel hasn't tinkered too much with the Android interface, aside from adding a few new widgets and changing the appearance of the dock at the bottom of the display. The most significant visual addition is the ability to select a theme for your home screen. Design Most sub-£100 handsets have the build quality and sturdiness of an Airfix kit put together using PVA glue, but we're pleased to report that the Alcatel OT-990 manages to fly in the face of tradition. An alternative battery cover is included in the box, just in case you're feeling the urge to stand out in the crowd. Although it's constructed entirely from plastic, the Alcatel OT-990 possesses a surprising amount of heft. The case is reassuringly solid, and you'll find no hint of creakiness when you hold it tightly in your palm. The only downside is that at 147 grams, it's quite heavy for a device of this class. Despite its low price point, the OT-990 feels solid and well-made. The back of the phone is fashioned from glossy plastic, which can make it tricky to grip when your hands are clammy. Thankfully, there's a bump at the bottom -- very much like the one seen on the Samsung Galaxy S -- which makes it easier to hold. Another nice touch is that there?s an alternative battery cover included in the box, which gives you some visual variety should you find the default cover a little too boring. The power and screen lock key is rather awkward to press, as it sits flush with the edge of the phone. We're rather less keen on the placement of the OT-990's buttons and interfaces. The power key is located on the left-hand edge of the phone, and is awkward to press because it sits flush with the casing of the device. A press is required to power-down the phone's screen, and it often takes several attempts to successfully locate the button. Thankfully, you can wake up the OT-990 by pressing the home button -- which, incidentally, is the only physical input on the front of the handset. Touchscreen At 3.5 inches, the Alcatel OT-990's capacitive touchscreen is slightly larger than those seen on rival budget devices, such as the LG Optimus One and Samsung Galaxy Mini . It can't quite compete with the 4.3-inch display on the gargantuan Orange Monte Carlo, however. The 3.5-inch screen is large for a phone of this class, but the resolution is quite low. With a resolution of 320x480 pixels and a palette of 256,000 colours, the OT-990's TFT (thin-film transistor) LCD panel isn't going to win any awards, even in the modest budget sector of the market. The screen is dull even when set to full brightness, with colours looking drab and washed-out. Although the touch panel is capacitive rather than the cheaper resistive kind, we experienced a few problems with its performance. Moving through home screens and interacting with on-screen commands often requires you to make several swipes and pokes as the screen doesn't seem to be particularly responsive. Colours on the OT-990's display tend to look drab, and the brightness could be better. We wondered if this were a processing issue, but a quick check of the pre-loaded Android task manager shows that few apps were actually running at the time. This worrying lack of responsiveness could have something to do with the screen protector, which comes pre-applied to the OT-990. Sony Ericsson has done a similar thing with some of its Xperia smart phones, although we never noticed a problem with touchscreen performance on those handsets. There's a chance that removing this protective barrier will improve the accuracy of the screen, but we're not convinced. The pre-applied screen protector prevents damage to the display, but we suspect it may also impede usability. Processing power and internal storage Because we're well into budget territory here, it should come as no great shock to learn that the OT-990 is sporting a 600MHz processor. This in itself is hardly a crime at this end of the market, but these CPUs were doing the rounds on cheap Android phones many months ago, and we can't help but feel it's high time that some brave manufacturer upped the stakes a little. Power-management options are available to help your battery last as long as possible. It's immediately apparent that you're running a humble CPU the moment you fire up the device. It takes an age to boot up, and swiping between home screens is occasionally jerky. We didn't notice any massive issues with moving between applications, though. Core apps such as Google Mail, Google Maps and YouTube functioned without a hitch, too. Internal storage is rather stingy, with just 200MB available from the get-go. Thankfully the device comes with a 2GB microSD card, so you've got a little more space for vital media. You'll need to make use of Android's ability to store a portion of application data on the microSD card, too, because the phone's tiny amount of app storage space fills up alarmingly quickly. Annoying, the OT-990's microSD card slot is located under the battery, which means you have to power-down to swap cards. Fans of hot-swapping will be disappointed to note that the microSD card bay is located underneath the battery, so you'll have to totally power-down the handset to replace it. Internet The OT-990 is furnished with a relatively untouched edition of the stock Android 2.2 browser. The OT-990's browser lacks Flash support, and the low resolution makes detailed pages look a bit ropey. The occasionally unresponsive screen and low resolution have a predictably detrimental effect on the phone?s suitability for Web browser. To add insult to injury, Adobe Flash isn?t supported either. Camera and video recording The OT-990?s 5-megapixel camera is a pleasant surprise, given the budget nature of the handset. It has autofocus, so you can take some pretty decent close-up shots, should the mood take you. The 5-megapixel camera is pretty good for a phone of this class, although HD video doesn't make the cut. The LED flash is problematic, however. It completely blasts most low-light shots, so a close-up of someone's face tends to look like you?ve captured a ghost on film. When you?re not taking tight shots it?s less of an issue. The OT-990 also captures video, although it?s restricted to VGA resolution, so don?t go getting any lofty notions of HD recording. Connectivity and battery life With this being an Android device, you get your usual 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity -- although it?s worth noting that the latter omits the more recent ?n? wireless standard, which just happens to be the one that?s fastest and has the best range. As the phone's battery charges, you get a neat animation of dripping liquid on the lock screen. Battery life is average, with the OT-990 managing around a day on one charge. One thing we did like was the way in which the battery charging status is displayed on the phone?s lock screen. A pool of green liquid forms at the bottom of the display, with drops slowly filling it up to the top. When your battery is fully charged, this pool of liquid totally fills the bottom third of the screen. Conclusion This time last year, an Android 2.2 device with a 600MHz processor and 5-megapixel camera would have been a real achievement, and we?d have had no qualms about giving it a hearty recommendation. Unfortunately for Alcatel, times have changed somewhat in the past 12 months. Cheap Android phones are not as rare a commodity as they once were, with the likes of the Orange San Francisco and Huawei Blaze coming in at less than £100. For only slightly more than that figure you can purchase an Orange Monte Carlo, which features a massive 4.3-inch screen, Android 2.3 and a 800MHz CPU. Against this competition, the OT-990 struggles to shine. It?s a certainly a well-made device, and is sure to survive a few drops and bumps. Sadly, the touchscreen is a unpredictable and Android 2.2 just feels tired and worn out now. With 4.0 around the corner, releasing a Froyo handset just seems like poor judgement, regardless of the low price. For the undemanding user, however, the OT-990 is going to represent a sound investment. That interchangeable battery cover and tough case design could make the phone ideal for accident-prone youngsters, too.
The Alcatel OT-990?s large screen, solid construction and 5-megapixel camera make it attractive for Android newcomers.

Alcatel OT-880
Well hello there, what's this chipper little handset hanging out in CNET UK's collective pocket? It's the Alcatel OT-880 of course -- a tiny touchscreen mobile with a pull-out Qwerty keyboard. It's available for around £100 SIM-free, or about £50 on pay as you go with a £10 monthly top-up. Kidneys and chrome We're afraid to report this phone ain't all that much to look at. It's quite nicely designed, with its vague kidney shape and chrome trim, but it looks more like a futuristic communicator device than a modern mobile. The OT-880 measures 106 by 57 by 17mm, so, while it's not the slimmest mobile we've ever come across, it's not too chunky and it'll slide into your jeans pocket with no complaints. At 120g it feels just a little insubstantial to hold, and the plastic body makes this mobile feel somewhat cheap. But, y'know -- it is cheap. Its kidney-shaped and lightweight design fits nicely in the hand, although it can feel a little cheap and flimsy. Around the edges of the OT-880 there's a slot for a MicroSD card (though this phone offers 60MB of internal memory), mechanical volume keys, a phone lock button, a microUSB port (for charging) and a 3.5mm socket for plugging in your headphones . On the front of the phone, you'll soon get to grips with the OT-880's display. Resistance is futile The 64mm (2.5-inch) display is disappointing. It's TFT-resistive, which means you have to press down on the screen itself for your touchscreen-pokes to register. With a resolution of 240x320 pixels, icons and text rendered on this screen look slightly blurry, too. The display itself isn't very bright and is set quite far back from the surface of the phone. Our buttocks clench with apprehension every time we see a compact, budget phone with a resistive touchscreen. Manufacturers tend to load up the interface with so many densely packed icons that actually hitting the mark and not prodding the wrong thing becomes a monumentally tricky task. Sadly, that's exactly what's happened here. While many of the menu options and icons are chunky and hard to miss, there are some more fiddly on-screen buttons that will test your patience. The OT-880's touchscreen display lacks responsiveness, but its creative interface makes navigating menus and creating shortcuts simple. It's a shame, because the interface itself is pretty creative. Where most budget touchscreen phones opt for the multiple-home-screen approach, the OT-880 uses only a single, long home screen that you can scroll down through. Icons from the main menu can be added to the home screen by pressing down on them for a moment, and then dragged around for customisation purposes. It's a neat system, and it works well for getting your shortcuts exactly where you want them. Key to our hearts The pull-out Qwerty keyboard is bearable, thanks to wide spaces between each key that minimise accidental mis-presses, and a space bar that's separated from the rest of the keys, which is comfy for when you're texting at speed. There's a 2-megapixel camera glued onto the OT-880's rear. Unfortunately, this camera is plagued by rubbishy hardware and some pretty shonky software. When you hit the shoot button, you end up capturing whatever it is the phone points at several seconds later. That huge delay got very annoying very quickly. The camera function is hindered by a delayed capture response and the camcorder's video quality is sub-standard. It's good to see 3G connectivity on board. If you're taken with the desire to do a little Web browsing or social networking on this phone, rest assured it'll be relatively quick. There's no Wi-Fi support, however, so you will be limited to mobile Internet. The camcorder function is also prodigiously bad, producing video that's so blurry and stuttery even an eagle that's had laser eye surgery would struggle to figure out what was going on (or, indeed, why it had laser eye surgery.) Conclusion The OT-880 is let down by its poor build quality and cheap plastic casing. The screen is small and doesn't look great, and, while the Qwerty keyboard certainly makes for speedy texting, you can find much better mobiles for the same money. Check out the LG Town GT350 , another keyboard phone that's slightly more slick.
The Alcatel OT-880 suffers from dodgy build quality and an underwhelming touchscreen, which makes it a tough mobile to recommend.
