Brother HL-4150CDN
The HL-4150CDN is part of a new range of laser printers from Brother that offer colourprinting at an affordable price and are designed for those who need a printer that can churnout a lot of documents on a daily basis. This one is priced at around £300 and also has aduplexer, so it can automatically print on both sides of a sheet of paper. Business-like design Most manufacturers creating laser printers for business users don?t really bother themselveswith trying to make their devices look aesthetically appealing, but with its cuboid design andwhite side panels, the 4250CDN is a bit more attractive than most, especially as the whitecontrasts nicely with the dark grey finish of the main body of the printer. The control panel is quite basic, as it comprises just a two-line monochrome flip-up screenand a mere seven buttons, but the menu system isn't all that complicated, so it's still relativelyeasy to use. One interesting feature is the secure printing functionality. You can add asecurity code to documents via the printer driver, so the printer will store them in memory untilsomeone presses the Secure button and enters a passcode to release them. This is handyif you're in a shared office and need to print off more sensitive documents such as salaryinformation or confidential letters. On the front, just under the control panel, Brother has added a USB port. This isn?t for printingphotos from PictBridge cameras, but instead allows you to print documents like PDFfiles and JPEG and TIFF images directly from memory keys. Brother has added a duplexer to the HL-4150CDN which can work on two pages at the same time. The bottom of the printer houses a slot in cassette-style paper tray that can hold up to 250sheets at a time and there's a 500 sheet tray available as an option if you've got particularlydemanding print needs. Above this tray, hidden behind a pull-down panel, there's a 50 sheetfeeder tray for odd-sized papers and envelopes. As with most laser printers, all the printedmaterial gets fed into a recessed paper tray at the top of the machine and there's a small flip-up piece that helps to stop pages from falling off the front of the tray. Quick installation To get this model up and running, you first have to pull open a panel at the front to release the plastic tabs that protect the slide-out tray which houses the four toner cartridges. Onceyou?ve done this you can load up the drivers on your computer (both Windows and Macdrivers are supplied) and choose one of two connection methods ? Ethernet or USB (sadly,Wi-Fi isn?t supported). It's all pretty straight forward stuff, so no matter which connection option you choose you should be up and running in a matter of minutes. Speed, quality and cost For a colour model in this price range, the 4150CDN turns out to be a fairly pacey performerin terms of print speed. Our ten page black and white text document was delivered in 36seconds, while a colour version of the same document took an almost equally speedy 39seconds. Our colour graphics ten page test was a little bit slower at 57 seconds, but it wasfaster at our colour business presentation, producing this ten page document in a fairly rapid35 seconds. Brother has also added a duplexer to this model so it can automatically print both sides of apage. The duplexer actually behaves a bit differently than those on rival models as it can workon two pages at a time to speed up the process somewhat. This helped it to print a doublesided black and white version of our text document in 54 seconds, which is a good speed fora duplex model. The Brother HL-4150CDN produces decent prints, but colour accuracy is rather iffy. The 4150CDN also puts in a fairly good showing in terms of print quality. Black and whitetext, especially, is dense and cleanly formed. Colours are also rich and bold, too. However, colour accuracy is a little off, with colour documents looking a gooddeal darker than the original. One side effect of this was that orange blocks on our businesspresentation were a little bit too red compared onscreen colours. Also, there was some slightbanding on large blocks of colour. Running costs are quite reasonable, though. Using high capacity toner cartridges, a black andwhite sheet works out at 1.9p, while a colour page will set you back 8.4p. Both those pricesinclude 0.7p for paper costs and work out cheaper than many competitors models with similarprice tags. Conclusion Its colour print-outs may be a little bit dark for some tastes, but the 4150's modest runningcosts and fast print speed still make it a good bet for those who need to produce a lot ofcolour documents on a daily basis.
The Brother HL-4150CDN is a decent laser printer boasting a fancy duplexer which automatically prints on both sides of a page.

Brother HL-4150CDN
It's surprising how cheap colour laser printers have become. The new Brother range starts at only £260, though this particular model is a little more expensive at £445. The Brother HL-4150CDN can be connected through USB or Ethernet, and can serve one to 10 users. It has built-in LCD screen, a 250-sheet tray with an option for an extra 500 sheets and a 50-sheet multipurpose media tray for envelopes, thin card and more. For sensitive documents, there's PIN-protected printing. Windows 7, Vista, XP and 2000 are supported out of the box, as is Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later, with Linux drivers available to download from http://solutions.brother.com. Duplex printing is catered for, and you can print PDF, TIFF and JPEG files from a compatible USB drive. The Brother HL-4150CDN promises up to 24 pages per minute, with the first page out in under 16 seconds. We found these figures a little optimistic. Our 20-page test document printed in around one minute and 10 seconds, with the first page ready in 22.3 seconds. With Duplex switched on, it printed in one minute and 35 seconds, which is slower than the claimed seven pages per minute, but far from sluggish. Our photo test card printed in 23.3 seconds.Print quality was pretty good for a laser printer of this price. Text printing was clear and vivid, with even the smallest point sizes perfectly readable. It could've been a little darker, but without comparing it side by side to a print-out from a more expensive laser printer, you're unlikely to find fault with the Brother HL-4150CDM. Colour documents also printed very well, with clear text, good contrast and very little banding. Colours were rich and accurate, and shading well realised. It was less capable when reproducing photographs. The images were a little grainy, the grayscale ramp very banded and colour reproduction was definitely over-dark. To be fair, photo printing is hardly the main reason for buying a colour laser printer, but it's worth bearing in mind if you print a lot of documents containing photos.A secure printing option keeps sensitive documents away from prying eyes. After entering a four-digit number on your computer, the print job is passed to the printer, but not actually printed until you enter the same code on the HL-4150CDN's screen. Very useful if your printer is networked and shared. As well as being inexpensive to buy, the Brother HL-4150CDN is reasonably cost-effective to run. Taking the higher-yield toner cartridges at the prices offered on Brother's website, the cost per page of a black and white print-out is 1.73 pence, and colour pages at 12.29 pence (both figures offered without the cost of the paper itself). Perhaps the colour cost is a little high, but it's bound to fall as the printer series achieves market penetration and net-discounted cartridges arrive.

Brother HL-2130
The entry-level HL-2130 mono laser printer is a neat, compact, no-nonsense machine that prints very good quality black text documents at nippy speeds and is very competitively priced. However, the lack of 'extras' and the less successful banding issues might cause some potential buyers a moment's hesitation.

Brother HL-2130
Many people don't need fax and scanning features -- they just want a cheap printer that will reliably pump out page after page at a reasonable running cost. Brother's entry-level HL-2130 monochrome laser printer seems to fit this bill, and it won't put too much of a dent in your bank balance, as it can be picked up for around £80 online. Dainty dimensions The HL-2130's petite dimensions are a real boon. It's much smaller than most laser printers, measuring just 368 by 183 by 360mm. The design is plain, but reasonably stylish, and the off-white finish doesn't look as boring as the grey colour of many competing models. Some cost-cutting is in evidence on the control panel -- or rather the lack of one. Instead of the usual two-line display and four-way control pad, this printer simply has three LEDs covering general, toner and drum errors, as well as a green 'ready' light. Beneath this, there's a big, green button marked 'go' that seems to do little other than instruct the printer to produce a test sheet. Despite its small size, the HL-2130 still manages to house a proper paper tray at the bottom that can hold up to 250 sheets of paper at a time -- more than enough for most home-office requirements. Above the main paper tray, there's a slot into which you can feed single sheets. This will primarily be used for envelopes and other irregularly shaped materials. The printed results are fed into an output tray that's formed of a cut-away in the top of the printer. Unlike many of today's printers, this one doesn't offer any networking support, so there's no built-in Wi-Fi and you won't find an Ethernet socket on the rear either. Instead, on the back of the machine, there's a standard USB port. The HL-2130 doesn't have a display, but instead relies on simple LEDs to indicate errors. Setting this model up to work with your PC really couldn't be more straightforward. Once you've taken it out of the box and removed the protective tabs, you just take the toner cartridge out of the slot, rotate it to make sure the toner is evenly distributed in the cartridge, and then replace it. Then it's just a matter of loading up the drivers from the included installation CD and connecting the printer up to your computer using a USB lead. Black magic The print quality of black text is very good. The printer produces dark, black characters that look very clean and crisp. Even when you enable the toner-saving mode, text still looks very strong and bold, so you can use this setting for pretty much everything bar the most important documents. The HL-2130's graphics performance isn't quite as hot, though. While dark lines and arrows are well defined and quite sharp, the output is less impressive when it comes to grey fills. Often these look quite stippled and, in larger areas, there's noticeable banding. The HL-2130 uses a two-part cartridge consisting of the drum and toner well. The toner part lasts for up to 1,000 pages, whereas the drum is good for 12,000 sheets. At current prices, the running cost works out at around 4.3p per page, including 0.7p for paper costs. That's quite expensive by laser printer standards. By way of comparison, the Samsung ML-1865W will set you back around 3.9p per page. Still, the printer is reasonably fast for such a low-cost model. It took 39 seconds to print out our ten-page black and white text document, and 41 seconds to produce ten copies of our black and white graphics sheet. Our ten-page business presentation took a little longer, at 45 seconds, but even that is a perfectly acceptable speed. Conclusion The Brother HL-2130 may not offer the last word in print quality, and it's not the cheapest laser printer in the long term. But its petite design, fast print speed and low price tag all work heavily in its favour. For those with less demanding printing needs, it's definitely worth checking out.
The Brother HL-2130's graphics performance could be slightly better, and it's not the cheapest monochrome laser printer in terms of running costs. But its crisp text, small size and low price mean it's still worth a gander.

Brother HL-2130 review
The Brother HL-2130 isn?t rich in features, and its ability to print graphics is limited. However, if you?re after a straightforward text-churner, the Brother is fast and extremely effective. Given that it?s available on the street for not much more than £80, that makes it a very impressive deal.
The Brother HL-2130 is a straightforward mono laser printer at a sub-£100 price, short on frills but relatively high on value.

Brother HL-5350DN
The HL-5350DN is a good, duplex, mono laser in a lot of ways. It's quick, easy to maintain and gives good quality print of both black text and greyscale graphics. It even makes a fair attempt at photographs, always a challenge for mono printers. It's not as cheap to run as some of its competitors, though, and this may lose it sales from customers making direct comparisons between machines. If you can find consumables cheaper than we can, of course, the decision could swing back in favour of the Brother machine.

BrotherHL-5350DN
The 5350DN gets its pages out quickly at a low cost, and is perfect for a small team that often needs to print out a short document. For more heavyweight work, it would need more memory. And for top quality printing, there are better quality printers ...
For some users, being able to print immediately is essential. If you want to hand a customer a copy of their reservation, for instance, the time it takes to print the first page is a very important factor. Brother claims that the 5350DN can produce this first page in 8.5 seconds, but this is only true if the printer has already been going. If it starts in standby mode, the first page takes 17 seconds, twice the time advertised by the manufacturer. And if you've only just switched it on, then you'll need to wait 38 seconds ... with delays like these, it's difficult to talk about 'immediately available' printing. In normal mode, the printer uses 600 W, and 4.4 W on standby.

Brother HL-2270DW
A fine everyday mono laser printer The Brother HL-2270DW laser printer is well-liked by reviewers. As the successor to the popular and well-reviewed Brother HL-2170W monochrome laser printer, it has a great deal to live up to. Suitable for a micro or small office, this printer produces documents of a quality sufficient for everyday use at a fast speed. M. David Stone of PCMag.com gives the Brother HL-2270DW 4 out of 5 stars and an Editors' Choice award for its small size and reasonably high quality output. With both wired and wireless connections, the HL-2270DW is recommended by Stone as a shared printer in a small office or as a home printer for a "power-user." The 250 sheet paper tray is adequate for the speed of the machine and for light office use. Justin Yu of CNET calls the HL-2270DW a "reliable, easy-to-use monochrome printer" that works well for a small business which needs high volume black-and-white prints. Cost-wise, he says that it's a viable alternative to an inkjet printer. More than 85 percent of the reviews at Newegg.com give this printer 4 or 5 golden eggs out of a possible 5, highlighting the HL-2270DW's small footprint and great value for money. Great features and performance, but Wi-Fi set-up can be tricky The HL-2270DW's auto-duplexer makes two-sided printing a snap, and it is loved by many of the users who review the printer at Amazon.com In general, the text printing is not quite desktop publishing quality, but it's adequate for an office's everyday needs, except for documents that use very small fonts. In tests at CNET, the HL-2270DW printed 18.64 pages per minute of all-black text, 19.03 ppm of graphics and 18.15 ppm of PowerPoint presentations, not quite matching the manufacturer's claims of 27 pages per minute. However, Melissa Riofrio of PC Advisor says that the results of her printing tests were below these speeds. The matte black laser printer has a simple control panel with just one button, labeled "Go", which performs a variety of tasks, including waking up the printer from sleep mode and canceling jobs. However, Riofrio says that she found it difficult to see the handle to remove the drum and the toner, which must be removed together. She had no difficulty with the printer's setup, reporting that the CD installation process was smooth and well-documented. Most of the more than 130 customer reviewers at Newegg.com agree. Yu of CNET had no problems with the WiFi set-up, but some first-time wireless users at Newegg.com say they found it to be a little confusing. In the more than 300 customer reviews at Amazon.com, two-thirds of the reviewers award the Brother HL-2700DW the maximum 5 stars. The printer's high quality printing, its auto-duplexing feature and its three connectivity options draw rave reviews. Some users identified problems printing large files in wireless mode. One user closely reviewed the documentation and reported that Brother recommends using a wired connection when printing these files. Professional reviewers and customers alike complain about the starter toner cartridge that ships with this printer. They say the cartridge did not last for the advertised 700 pages, and only printed 300 or 400 pages. The professional reviewers recommend buying a high-yield toner cartridge that can print about 1,500 pages at a reasonable cost. Some customer reviewers at Amazon.com report that the printer stops printing when the toner is low, but before the cartridge is empty. expand collapse
Critics say the Brother HL-2270DW is among the best monochrome laser choices if you need a wireless printer for home use (or if you just need to print internal documents at work). It prints documents quickly, though the print quality of documents is more suitable for internal use than for publications. The HL-2270DW has a relatively small footprint and is perfect for a small office or a home office "power user" where its wireless feature makes it easy to share across a small network. Cost per page is about 3.3 cents; a high yield cartridge brings it down to about 2.6 cents per page.

Brother HL-2270DW
Automatic duplexing and wireless make the HL-2270DW a more-than-basic laser printer, but its toner costs are high.
The Brother HL-2270DW monochrome laser printer costs $150 (as of August 19, 2011)--a very low price, especially considering that it includes Wi-Fi. The small or home office that might consider this model, however, should note that its toner costs are on the high side. The HL-2270DW supports USB, ethernet, and wireless connectivity. The CD-based installation procedure is well documented and progresses smoothly. The minimal control panel merely offers a bunch of blinking LEDs; to Brother's credit, though, they're labeled with words. The sole button is labeled ?Go?--a somewhat confusing name, as its tasks range from waking up the printer from sleep mode to canceling a job to disabling wireless. Paper handling includes automatic duplexing (two-sided printing), a somewhat bendy 250-sheet input tray, a 100-sheet output tray on top, and a front manual-feed slot discreetly hidden behind a shiny logo panel. The HL-2270DW performed adequately in our tests. Connected to a PC, it printed monochrome pages consisting primarily of text at a below-average rate of 17.5 pages per minute, and a small, simple photo at a middling 5.9 ppm. Mac speeds were about the same: 17.7 ppm for monochrome text, and an above-average 6 ppm for four pages of mixed text and graphics in a PDF file. Graphics quality was slightly rough and grainy, but acceptable. You flip open a front panel to reach the printer's consumables. The toner and drum components are separable, but you must remove them together, using a handle that would be easier to find if it were a color other than black. A green (thank you, Brother) lever releases the toner from the drum. Since the drum lasts a lot longer than the toner cartridges do, having to drag out the drum every time you want to replace the toner is somewhat annoying. Toner is expensive. The HL-2270DW ships with a 700-page starter cartridge of black toner. The standard-size replacement costs $38 and lasts for 1200 pages, which works out to a high 3.2 cents per page. High-yield black toner cartridges cost $55 each and last for 2600 pages, for a higher-than-average 2.1 cents per page. The $81 drum unit, when replaced after about 12,000 pages of use, will add less than a penny to each of the next 12,000 pages. Want a little bit more for a price that?s still low? Check out the HL-2270DW's close cousin, the $200 Brother HL-2280DW , which tacks a color scanner onto the top of the same machine.

Brother HL-2250DN
The HL-2250DN sits towards the bottom of Brother's current line-up of monochrome laser printers . But, despite its low price tag of around £120, it still manages to offer a few extras, not least of which is the ability to automatically print on both sides of a sheet of paper. Short and stout This printer is very petite, with a small footprint of just 368 by 360mm. It's quite squat too, at a mere 183mm tall, so it really doesn't take up all that much room on your desk compared to most laser printers. The design may be quite simple -- the HL-2250DN is just a plastic box with rounded corners -- but it's quite elegant too, and the matte black finish gives it a professional air, so we think it'll look just right in the average home office. Most laser printers have a traditional control panel with an LCD screen and a cursor pad beneath for moving through menus. The HL-2250DN doesn't bother with any of this. Instead, there are three LEDs to indicate general, toner and drum errors, and a single green LED to show when the machine's ready to print. Right beneath these LEDs sits a wide, green 'go' button whose sole purpose seems to be to print a test sheet whenever it's pushed. At the bottom of this model, there's a 250-sheet paper tray, which should be enough for most people's requirements. Above this, you'll find a single-sheet feeder hidden behind a pull-down flap. This can be used for feeding in odd paper sizes, as well as envelopes. The printer's output is spewed out of the top into a recessed tray, and there's a flip-up stopper that will prevent the paper from curling and working its way off the tray. The installation process is reasonably hassle-fee. The HL-2250DN arrives with the toner cartridge and drum pre-installed, but, before you use it, you have to eject the cartridge to remove some protective tape and then turn it from side to side to ensure the toner is evenly distributed within the cartridge. Once you've done this, you can replace the cartridges and then install the drivers on your PC . The HL-2250DN lacks the monochrome, two-line display you'll find on most laser printers, instead making do with simple LED warning lights. This model uses a two-part toner and drum design, so you don't have to change the drum every time the toner runs out. The toner cartridge has a capacity of either 1,200 pages or 2,600 pages, while the drum will last for around 12,000 pages. Using online prices for the toner and drum replacements, costs work out at about 3.3p per page, which includes 0.7p for paper costs. That's some way off the cheapest running costs we've come across, but it's not the most expensive either. You can connect the printer to your computer directly via USB or, alternatively, you can use its Ethernet port to hook it up to your network, so you can share it among multiple computers. Sadly, there's no Wi-Fi, so using a wired Ethernet lead is the only way to get the machine onto your home network. Cheap speed For a printer of this price, the HL-2250DN is pretty speedy. It managed to pump out our ten-page black and white text document in 38 seconds, and also took 38 seconds to produce ten copies of our graphics test sheet. Our ten-page business presentation completed in just 33 seconds. One of this model's key features is its support for duplex printing -- the ability to print on both sides of a piece of paper without requiring you to manually turn the sheet over. Duplex printing takes longer than single-sided printing, as you'd expect. The HL-2250DN took 1 minute and 2 seconds to produce five double-sided sheets of our black and white text document, which isn't bad. Print quality is, on the whole, very good compared to that of similarly priced rivals. Text looks smooth and clean, and the printer even produces good text results in the toner-saving mode. It's not quite as good at graphics as it is at text printing, though. Although the lines and arrows in our graphics document were crisply reproduced, large areas of grey fill showed distinct evidence of banding. Conclusion Overall, the Brother HL-2250DN offers good value for money. It's cheap but offers enticing features, such as duplex printing and networking support. We also like the fact it's so compact.
The Brother HL-2250DN monochrome laser printer may not offer the cheapest running costs on the market, but it's competitively priced, doesn't take up much space, and produces good results at a decent speed.

Brother HL-2250DN
Brother?s HL-2250DN is a very good little printer for the money. It?s quick and convenient to use and produces good quality text print. Greyscale graphics and photos aren?t quite so good, but for general SOHO duties it should sit quietly in the corner of your desk and just get on with the job. Over 20ppm and duplex print as standard make a good spec on a £100 printer.
Brother has built duplex print and comparatively high speed into a small-footprint machine with a competitive price.

La HL-2250DN n’offre pas le coût d’utilisation le plus bas du marché mais son prix est compétitif, elle est compact et délivre de bonnes impressions à une vitesse correcte.

Brother HL-5380DN review
The Brother is a serious-minded printer for those who like their options. It?s not pretty, and its output is a little on the light side. Given the availability of the inferior but still good Kyocera Mita FS-1320D for around £160, this printer does need to be around £50 cheaper. Nonetheless, the running costs are very good, and as a reliable page churner, this model has merit.
As an office mono laser printer, the Brother HL-5380DN is a very cost-effective solution.

Brother HL-5380DN
If you want a mono laser printer which can print a bit quicker than the standard one-per-desk models, the Brother HL-5380DN will do it for you. It doesn't cost that much to run, either, though you may find both text and graphics come through a little light, in comparison with some of its rivals. Fast duplex and a handy secure print facility may also be bonuses you're looking for.
Brother?s HL-5380DN is a small, economical, mono laser printer, with a higher turn of speed than many in the same price bracket.

Brothers HL- 4040CN has everything you might need in a home or office printer
The Brother is a cheap printer in terms of both standard and high yield cartirdges, so if you and your small band of co-workers will be frequently producing colour prints it's a decent choice, and it will also suit low-volume printing at home. We're particularly fond of its excellent design, and we're happy that it scoops an award this month

Brother HL-4040CN
This basic office printer balances good pricing, speed, and print quality with a sometimes-awkward design.
Brother takes a major evolutionary step with the HL-4040CN: This is the first color laser designed by the company itself, rather than a rebranded model from another manufacturer. It's a decent first effort, offering good overall speed and print quality for a competitive price. The design sometimes falls short on ease of use, unfortunately. The setup process is easy and thoroughly documented in a printed guide as well as in animated videos on the included CD. Find a buddy to help you lift the printer, though: At about 63.7 pounds (according to Brother's specs), it's heavier than most comparably equipped color lasers. At default settings the HL-4040CN printed competently. Its speeds--average overall--ranged from 19.3 pages per minute for plain black text to 4.2 ppm for graphics. Text in all tested fonts looked perfectly crisp. Color images erred on the yellow side; photos looked grainy, especially on glossy laser paper. Using the driver's "Fine (2400 dpi class)" setting improved images noticeably. Brother deserves kudos for its software, which includes a comprehensive, well-illustrated user guide (in HTML and PDF) and interactive help files, as well as a dynamic status monitor. The driver offers a good supply of printing options. The hardware, on the other hand, needs work. The control panel's LCD is great, as it can tilt 0 to 90 degrees, glows green when things are normal and red when things go awry, and communicates in plain English. But the menu buttons didn't always make sense to me: The up-arrow/plus button is for scrolling backward and the down-arrow/minus is for scrolling forward, while the "Go" button is also for pausing. The 50-sheet multipurpose tray is unmarked and hard to find (it folds out from the front of the printer). Most odd, the toner cartridge bays are not keyed to prevent insertion of the wrong color. Brother says that such a mistake will not damage the printer, and it didn't when I intentionally switched two colors. But the printer should, at least, have recognized the mistake at the start and refused to print. Instead it printed a bizarrely colored page. Cost per page (based on Brother's specs) is very good. The high-yield cartridges have a page capacity of 5000 for black and 4000 for each color and cost $93 and $130, respectively. A half-page of black text, therefore, will cost less than 2 cents' worth of toner to print, and a color page (using a small amount of black plus all three colors) will cost less than 12 cents. Standard-capacity cartridges with shorter page lives (and thus higher costs) are also available. The HL-4040CN is designed to be, and is priced as, a low-end machine. Shoppers seeking more features (such as additional paper capacity) might consider its higher-end cousin, the HL-4070CDW. Melissa Riofrio

Brother HL-4040CN review
The HL-4040CN is still an excellent printer, but at this price it can no longer compete with other similarly specified colour lasers such as Epson's Aculaser C2800N. For this reason, it scores only three stars here.
