Samsung BD-C5500

Panasonic DMP-BD85 review
The Panasonic DMP-BD85 is a feature-packed Blu-ray player that boasts great playback performance. Unfortunately, it is slightly let down by its load times and sluggish interface..
The Panasonic DMP-BD85 (or Panasonic DMP-BD85EB-K to give it its full name) is a high-end Blu-ray player aimed at serious movie aficionados.

Home Cinema Choice Issue 180: Panasonic DMP-BD85
Panasonic is a superstar of the Blu-ray world. Year after year, its new players are greeted with the sort of unbridled enthusiasm usually reserved for Tom Cruise's red carpet walkabouts in Leicester Square. The reason for its techno-celebrity is simple: innovation. Profile 1.1, BD-Live, Blu-ray recording – you name it, Panasonic did it first, and over the years no-one has done more to push the format forward. However, Panasonic's position has been under threat from deck's like LG's brilliant BD390, which offers built-in Wi-Fi, PC streaming, unrivalled digital media support and top-drawer performance at a consumer-friendly price. Finding itself at the start of 2010 in the rare position of playing catch-up, Panasonic has hit back with the DMP-BD85. Equipped with a killer spec and more of the picture processing goodness that made its predecessors so successful, the BD85 might just be Panasonic's masterpiece – at least until it unleashes the 3D-capable DMP-BDT300 later this year… Simple design On the outside, the BD85 is an unremarkable sight. Touch sensitive keys, curves or a gloss black finish? A Panasonic buyer craves not these things, apparently. A blue light is the best you can hope for, but at least build quality is solid. The outlook is much brighter on the back. Multi-channel analogue outputs offer receiver luddites a chance to enjoy hi-res Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks, and there's an Ethernet port for accessing BD-Live content, which is finally becoming worth bothering with. There's also a USB input for attaching the BD85's supplied USB dongle – because one of the BD85's big new features is Wi-Fi support, bringing the web into your living room without Ethernet cables cluttering up the place. Plugged into the back, the chunky dongle is unwieldy and could cause problems in your AV rack, but there's an extension lead if you're worried about that sort of thing. Wireless connectivity throws up more goodies. The BD85 is DLNA certified and as a result you can pull music and photos from PCs on your home network, and the setup process is slick and hassle-free. DivX HD playback has been added, too, popping up on the spec sheet alongside MP3 and JPEG. You can play these from USB sticks via the port on the front, which sits next to an SD card slot that accepts higher-capacity SDHC and SDXC cards. But because the BD85 doesn't come with BD Live memory built-in, you'll need to keep a card in the slot for any online activity. Once running, the deck keeps things simple onscreen, and apart from some unnecessary submenus, it makes navigation a breeze. But there's a sluggishness about the BD85 that you really shouldn't have to put up with these days. Entering the setup menu not only lost my place in the movie, but i also had to wait for the player to handshake with my receiver and TV again. Beating heart Once again, Panasonic's P4HD chipset is the beating heart of the BD85 and, in conjunction with PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus, it delivers beautiful images. With Inglourious Basterds the opening shots of the verdant French countryside are conveyed with such depth and richness that you can almost smell the grass, and after colonel Landa has charmed his way into the house, the fantastic contrast range sheds light on the painstaking detail of the rickety interior.

Panasonic DMP-BD85

LG BD570
A fully-loaded Blu-ray player with streaming functionality and extensive format support.
Empfehlung von Techradar vom
LG BD570
LG was an early advocate for network Blu-ray players, and with the BD570 it has continued to hone this vision. The result is a disc spinner that equals or exceeds many dedicated network media streamers. If you have music or video files on your PC or a NAS (Network Attached Storage), as well as a significant disc collection, this do-it-all deck could be a perfect buy.FeaturesThe BD570 is remarkably small. The design is smart and tidy, with the disc tray to the left of the fascia and a USB input for media playback on the right. This same USB slot has to be used for BD-Live downloads as there is no onboard memory. Even more surprisingly, there is no USB slot on the back for you to add your own. This is an odd lapse in judgement on what otherwise is a well thought out product. Having to swap out BD-Live storage for a media flash drive is inconvenient and could be avoided with the inclusion of another rear-panel USB (or internal memory). The BD570 is DLNA certified and can stream content from other DNLA devices on your home network, using either a wired connection or via the onboard 802.11n Wi-Fi module. File support is fairly comprehensive and covers the following extensions: .avi, .DivX, .mpg, .mkv, .mp4, .wma, .jpg, .jpeg and .png. The player will also play AVCHD camcorder footage and can be registered online to play DivX VOD content. MP3 and WAV are both catered for, although there is no support for FLAC audio files. The player can also access content through LG's NetCast online portal. This is not overly populated at present and includes YouTube (which is made easy to search through a virtual keyboard), Picasa and the surprisingly engaging Accuweather app. Ease of UseThe user interface on the player is good, with bobbing ice-cube graphics that represent functions. Movie, Photo and Music enable you to browse for media; Home Link inspects your network for plug and play devices as well as DNLA compliant PCs and NAS devices, while NetCast takes you to LG's own content online portal. Stick in an audio CD and the player will automatically pull album art from the Gracenote media database. You can also interrogate Gracenote for album art when playing music files, provided the files are on USB. The BD570 will not scrape the database if you're accessing files over a network. Similarly, when album art for a music file is found on a USB device you can only see it within an Info pane. Such discrepancies in operation and use make the BD570 not quite the seamless multimedia experience you might hope for. Another feature of note is Music ID. During a movie you can hit the Music ID button on the remote and ingeniously the player will pull down detailed soundtrack information from Gracenote. Bundled with the deck you'll find Nero Media Home 4 Essentials, which is DNLA compliant media server software. Rear connections comprise Ethernet, HDMI v1.2, both electrical and optical digital outputs, component video and phono AV out. The player supports CEC system control over HDMI, which LG dubs Simplink. PictureThis is also a fine disc spinner when viewed via HDMI. While it's not videophile grade, even in a high-end cinema environment the player doesn't disappoint. The opening sequence of The Dark Knight, combines challenging motion detail (the initial skyscraper zoom) with rich levels of detail and the LG doesn't stumble.

Panasonic DMR-BS750 Blu-ray recorder
Panasonic's DMR-BS750 is arguably the most sophisticated entertainment hub available in the UK. Features The BS750's capabilities include: twin Freesat tuners; DVD and hard disk recording; Profile 2.0 playback and compatibility with MP3s, JPEGs, DV, AVCHD, DivX files and audio CDs. An Ethernet connection that enables BD Live playback, also allows ripped CDs to be named via Gracenote and it can access internet widgets, such as YouTube and Picasa. But the jewel in the crown is the DMR-BS750's ability to record HD on to Blu-ray. Or is it? Not too long ago the world would have gone bananas for a machine that could make broadcast-quality recordings onto optical discs. Now, video tape is a fast-fading memory and even the role of DVD as an archiving medium is diminishing. And yet if recording HD on to Blu-ray were as simple as recording everything that's broadcast in HD, the case for a Blu-ray recorder would be highly compelling. With just two HD channels on Freesat (compared with more than 30 on Sky) there isn't the surplus of must-keep content that there should be. If ITV's HD output were greater than the paltry smattering of programmes it currently offers, the broadcaster's anti-copy measures would be a serious spanner in the works. You can still record the likes of The Bill onto the hard disk in HD and down-convert to standard definition onto DVD and, of course, you can dub your AVCHD camcorder recordings to Blu-ray. However, Freesat desperately needs more HD channels, particularly as HD versions of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and five will start to feature on Freeview soon. While it's no work of art, at least the unit is inoffensive to look at. The fascia drops down to reveal an SD card slot plus USB, DV, S-video, composite and stereo audio inputs. An LCD display panel uses large digits to show the channel number (but not the name), while there's a red recording light for each Freesat tuner. The most notable rear connections are the HDMI and Ethernet, but there's no built-in audio decoder and hence no multichannel analogue audio outputs. Nor can it be plumbed into a home network via the Ethernet; all external files have to be fed in using memory cards or discs. Ease of Use Given the multitude of functions, Panasonic has done a commendable job with the menu system which is intuitive and graphically pleasing. The most grating niggle probably remains the minor delay that sometimes occurs when switching between some functions, notably when recording is involved. Recording from Freesat is a cinch, with automatic programme tracking ensuring that over-running shows are fully recorded. Loading Blu-ray discs is a painfully slow process, but you can watch movies at 1080p 24fps, while DVDs can be upscaled, too. Picture High-definition recordings, retaining their studio-like quality on the hard disk, look every bit as sensational as you'd expect. The biggest test though is the quality of Blu-ray recordings and an archive recording of The Tudors shows just how amazing the system can be. Every nuance of the splendid costume drama is beautifully preserved for good on our own optical disc. Even compressing the file using the lower quality HL mode yields excellent results, but take note: there's no guarantee that finalised discs will play in other brands of deck. When recording onto DVD, or recording from external sources via the AV inputs, you have to use the regular XP, SP, LP and EP modes. The DMR-BS750 does an exemplary job with standard-def recording, which doesn't have to be made onto DVD.
