Denon DBP-2012UD

Denon?s pricey but impressive 3D Blu-ray player delivers heavenly picture, sound and build quality, but look to cheaper rivals if you want better web content, MKV support and Wi-Fi
Denon?s typically luxurious Blu-ray spinner boasts killer performance and some alluring features ? but you?ll need deep pockets?

TechRadar Issue 198: Denon DBP-2012UD
The Denon DBP-2012UD is built like Vin Diesel and boasts high-grade internal electronics that aim to deliver superior performance to the masses. The £750 price tag is as hefty as the player itself, but will be viewed as peace of mind for any AV enthusiast looking for a machine to satisfy their videophile aspirations. Apart from the headline 3D capability, this is also a universal player, which means it spins Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio, too. A USB port and DLNA 1.5 support also boost the deck's multimedia cred. The machine shares the same structural DNA as Denon's reference-class DBP-4010UD, which has Direct Mechanical Ground Construction to suppress vibration. Plus the luxurious build extends to the chunky buttons on the fascia and the smoothly gliding disc-tray mechanism. Around the back, it's disappointing to find a single HDMI v1.4 port, which means owners of the DBP-2012UD with older AVRs will need to employ the 7.1 analogue outputs to enjoy HD audio and 3D pictures simultaneously. Elsewhere on that back panel you'll find a separate set of analogue stereo outputs for pure audio playback, component and composite video ports and a coaxial digital audio output. The deck will also slot beautifully into a custom install setup with RS232 and remote control input/output. Stable net link An ethernet port is your only gateway to you home network, as there's no built-in wi-fi or facility for adding it via a USB dongle. For £750, you might expect that option. Once plumbed in, though, I had no trouble streaming any of the supported formats during my test. You can also play them from external devices via the front USB port, or from discs. There's no MKV support, though.Onscreen presentation is simple but effective. The Home menu sports just four icons – Media Player, YouTube (greyed out on my sample, as it is a firmware update), Setup and Quit. Choose Setup and you're greeted by a pleasant GUI with a bright colour palette and a straightforward structure. The cursor responds quickly to any command, making for a hassle-free user experience. The remote is co-operative too – each button is emblazoned with its function in shouty capital letters and logical placement of the frequently-used menu and playback controls lets you navigate intuitively. The set-up menu covers most bases, including straightforward network setup, rudimentary bass management settings for the multichannel analogue outs, HDMI settings (colour space/Deep Colour) and a couple of basic 3D options, although for the heavyweight picture adjustments you need to enter a separate menu. This is where the DBP-2012UD shows its true videophile colours, boasting a list of tweaks that stretches far beyond your average budget player. You can adjust the contrast, brightness, gamma, sharpness and hue, as well as individual white, black and setup levels and 3D, block and mosquito noise reduction. Your settings can be stored in five memory presets, which will be useful if you want to calibrate it for different viewing conditions. Loading times are in line with most other players on the market – our Tech Labs found it took 43 seconds to load its test disc after hitting the Close button. However, the DBP-2012 does take a while to wake up. Tech LabsPower consumption: WattsIdle: 28Powered: 28A sizable power consumption when the Denon is ticking over – but putting it in standby drops it down to under 1WAudio Jitter: psResult: 151The DBP-2012UD's analogue audio jitter figure of 151 picoseconds is commendableLoading: Boot/JavaBoot speed and tray eject: 11 secondsTray in to BD menu: 43 secondsQuite slow to wake up from StandbyMaestro at work Picture performance is excellent. The Denon relishes the challenges posed by Inception, expertly eking out the detail in the movie's global scenery as well as making those jaw-dropping CG shots of folding buildings and exploding shop fronts look staggeringly sharp. There's also depth and definition to the Denon's pictures that any self-respecting movie fan will revel in. Blacks are as solid as they come, colours are richly saturated, yet realistic, while edges are clean as a whistle. Add to this a subtlety of touch that allows delicate shading, textures and shadow detail to remain visible. These qualities also help produce dazzling 3D images, which are smooth and sharp without any major blurring or crosstalk issues. It's a slight shame, however, that you can't tweak the depth of the image like the latest Panasonic and Samsung decks. Play about with the picture settings and you can easily fine tune the picture to work in harmony with your display and room conditions.

Denon DBP-1611UD

TechRadar Issue 194: Denon DBP-1611UD
Denon's first 3D Blu-ray deck, the DBP-1611UD, looks like it could be a decent proposition for anyone with a cutting-edge 3D-capable AVR to take care of the sonic side of things. The step-up £750 DBP-2012UD (due on sale soon) has multi-channel outputs and superior construction, whilst the aging (and expensive) DBP-4010UD and flagship DVD-A1UD both lack networking and 3D fun and games. Beyond 3D, the DBP-1611UD story has several intriguing chapters, including hi-res SACD/DVD-A playback, DLNA networking and direct access to Internet features such as YouTube. I couldn't observe the results of Denon dipping its toe in the murky waters of internet video on my review sample, as the company had yet to activate the feature, but either way it probably won't rank that highly on the shopping lists of most AV enthusiasts out there; it probably makes more sense to pair the Denon with a 'Smart' TV for web functions. The deck itself is typical Denon: well-built, nicely laid out fascia, clear display window, all wrapped up in that rather dour, albeit durable black metal casing. Under the hood is a newly designed centre-drive mechanism with a separated unit structure and vibration-suppressing construction. The electronic circuits have been mounted in separate blocks to eliminate noise or interference. Unsurprisingly, purity of signal is paramount. No country for old links The connections roster is a little bit on the light side with no real surprises given the price – this is not Denon Link country – except arguably the omission of a optical digital audio output. With 1GB of built-in memory for enjoying BD Live functions, there's no necessity for a rear USB socket, but there is one around the front for memory expansion or for reading multimedia files. The remote is a 'glo-key' affair that makes it easier to see the keys in the dark, unless you're wearing tinted 3D specs, of course... Setting up the deck is child's play. With HDMI and Ethernet cables connected, you're set to go, as the DBP-1611UD automatically configures itself. Upscaling of all discs is automatic, but if judder does occur, a dedicated HDMI mode button on the remote control lets you opt out of 1080p24 delivery. The DBP-1611UD won't win any prizes for the design of its menu system. Aesthetically, it's light years behind those in current circulation from the likes of Sony, Samsung and LG, but worse are some of the illogical navigation steps you sometimes have to take. There's a home screen, but annoyingly, disc playback is excluded from this. The screen just has buttons for the Media Player, YouTube, Setup, and bizarrely, a Quit button. At least the deck made light work of connecting to my Twonky server, but I did tie myself up in knots when trying to move around the media player. It's irritating when a media player can't indicate which files on a server are incompatible without making you try and play them – MKV files in this case – but it sucks more than a thirsty lamb when you can't move back through the folders and are forced to come back in via the home screen. However, I can happily report a high degree of success playing a selection of AVCHD, AVI, MP4 (useful for YouTube downloads), MPEG-1 and broadcast MPEG-2 files with just one of a couple of DivX HD clips given short shrift. Bit of a player But Blu-ray and DVD playback are where the DBP-1611UD has to earn its corn and in both respects this is an exceptional deck. The Spears and Munsil HD test disc shows how accurate the colour fidelity is, how smooth images move and how exceptional detail is even in the most gloomy of scenes. Boot up time is on the sluggish side but the process of engaging 3D is quick and easy. Pop a 3D platter in the disc tray and a prompt appears asking if you want to watch in 2D or 3D. Denon DBP-1611UD test data Power consumption (Watts):Idle: 15WThe idling figure is slightly higher than most 3D decks.Playing: 17WSlapping on a disc nudges it up by a couple of Watts.Audio Jitter (Ps):Jitter: 158 PsAn excellent result; in the same class as audiophile-quality CD players.Loading (Boot/Java):Boot speed & tray eject: 28 secondsTray in to main BD menu: 45 secondsEjecting the tray from standby is very slow, but loading is faster.Watching on our resident Philips 46PFL9705H, I was mightily impressed by the virtual absence of any crosstalk while watching the Monsters Vs Aliens disc, especially the scene on the Golden Gate bridge which can sometimes look like two bridges when some players and screen combine. The image is as crisp and dynamic as I've ever seen it and it is a definite match for the 2D version, which is unencumbered by crosstalk contamination. Come fly with Denon But the best advert for this deck is how well it can play the 3D Avatar Blu-ray disc. The scene when Sully comes out of stasis is quite incredible as you come to truly appreciate the depth of the hanger. Butterflies in the n'avi jungle catch the eye where previously they blended in to the background. Overall, if you can live with the imperfections of its operating system, Denon's DBP-1611UD certainly delivers the goods where it truly matters in an AV context – in the Blu-ray department.Follow TechRadar Reviews on Twitter: http://twitter.com/techradarreview

Denon DBP-1611UD
Denon definitely have the class leading Oppo BDP-83 in its sights when designing this player. Although it lacks the Anchor Bay video processing chip that the Oppo has, the DBP-1611UD pushed the envelope further by adding 3D capability and content streaming features at $100 less. So it sits nicely in a price bracket that is considered affordable yet offering future proof features along with Denon?s reputation for quality.

TechRadar 163: Denon DVD-2500BT
When is a Blu-ray player not a Blu-ray player? When it's a Blu-ray transport – like the Denon DVD-2500BT. The nomenclature gives it away: this is a multi-purpose video disc-spinner, primarily Blu-ray and DVD, but its real strength lies in what it hasn't got. Namely onboard audio-processing, multiple AV outputs or high-end video tweakery. In fact, spin this beast around and all you will ï¬nd on the back panel is a solitary HDMI output, an RS232 port and a couple of multiroom jacks.DVD bargain I have never been one for minimalism, but Denon just might have an idea here. If you have an all-singing, all-dancing AV amp, receiver or processor with cutting-edge audio-decoding and fancy video scaling built-in, why pay to duplicate these features? So Denon has taken its purist BD player, the £1,700 DVD-3800BD, and thrown out all the non-essential features to offer the same core performance at a much lower price. As you still get the Denon Precision Drive Mechanism, separate block construction, multi-layer chassis and all of the core high-end hardware components, one can only view the DVD-2500BT's £900 price tag as a cinephile bargain. No cutting corners on featuresIt's not as stripped down and basic as one might think either. Even if you don't have a high-end amp, the DVD-2500BT has a basic 1080p up-scaler built-in for prime connection straight to an HDTV. That HDMI output is fully v1.3a compliant and you get 24Hz support as well. The menus use none-too-shoddy graphics, it handles DivX discs with ease and it has an SD-card slot on the front for JPEGs, MP3 or WMA ï¬les. On the downside there's no SACD or DVD-A playback or Denon-Link connection to reduce jitter in the audio data stream (and the HDMI format can have more jitters than a wino on a Sunday morning). It's Proï¬le 1.1, too, (Bonus View) and disc-loading and unloading is painfully slow compared to DVD.Jaw-dropping picturesJust as well then that it produces simply breathtaking Blu-ray pictures. We are talking a jaw-dropping upgrade over basic players such as the PS3, with silky smooth scrolling, black levels from the depths of Hades and a range of colour tones that will stretch all but the very best high-end display devices. I was lucky enough to audition the very ï¬rst DVD-2500BT that arrived in the UK and within minutes of spinning the ï¬rst disc I knew I needed a major projector upgrade. For a sub £1,000 price tag the Denon DVD-2500BT eclipses the video performance of any Denon source that has preceded it. Hook it up to decent 1080p plasma and the image is all but three-dimensional. With a good 1080p projector you can create a 100in image with a contrast ratio and colour rendition that will embarrasses most 42in LCD TVs – just check out Ratatouille on Blu-ray for an absolute feast for the eyes!
