Optoma HD20
The Optoma HD20 is among the least expensive 1080p projectors available, and reviews thus far say it is more capable than similarly priced projectors, such as the Vivitek H1081 (*Est. $950) . Picture quality is good, with terrific colors right out of the box. Brightness is high enough that the Optoma HD20 will work in most viewing settings, including living rooms and family rooms. Black levels are good but are bested by higher-end -- and more expensive -- projectors. Finding a good spot in your viewing room can be a challenge because of the limited zoom range and lack of any lens-shift adjustment. Additionally, this is a DLP projector, and those few people who can see that technology's rainbow-effect artifact will likely be happier with another choice. Best blacks and contrast levels are achieved using the projector's auto-iris feature, but reviewers say the way that works is so distracting that most recommend skipping it. If you have a bigger budget, the Epson Home Cinema 8350 (*Est. $1,300) delivers great colors and deeper blacks and is easier to place in a room. That projector uses LCD technology, so it's a better fit for rainbow-effect sufferers. The Optoma HD20 has been extensively reviewed. The best reports can be found at ProjectorCentral.com and ProjectorReviews.com, two enthusiast sites that do a great job of testing and evaluating projectors. PCMag.com, Audioholics.com and Britain's TrustedReviews.com also weigh in with competent and testing-based reports. User reviews can be read at Amazon.com and Newegg.com.
While more expensive projectors are better performers, the Optoma HD20 is the top choice in its price class. Blacks aren't the deepest you'll find but are deep enough to please all but the pickiest of viewers. Picture quality is excellent overall, with great colors even without a calibration. Brightness is high, which means the HD20 is a good choice for use in a family room or living room. On the downside, the HD20 is a DLP projector, which could spell trouble for those very few people who can see the rainbow effect. No lens shift and a short zoom range can make for a tricky installation in some rooms. A feature meant to deepen blacks is more of a distraction than a help, reviews say. Everyone says, however, that the value is undeniable for those who want a true big-screen experience at home.

Optoma HD20 DLP Projector
PerformanceFeaturesErgonomicsValuePrice: $999 At A Glance: Excellent detail & color via HDMI ? Poor blacks & shadow detail ? No lens shift ? Excellent user interfaceIn some respects, the Optoma HD20 is an exceptional value, providing a razor-sharp 1080p image for just about as little money as any projector I know of. It's overall detail and color are excellent via HDMI, and it offers extensive controls, surprisingly advanced features, and a well-organized user interface. However, the lack of lens shift makes placement difficult without invoking the keystone control that can degrade the detail a lot. And even if you solve that problem, the shadow detail is poor, which causes dark scenes have large areas of solid darkness rather than subtle low-level details. Finally, at the largest image size I could manage in our studio given the lack of lens shift, the black level was quite high, which means the black of space was dark gray and letterbox bars were obvious. For better performance in this critical area, a larger image is a must.

Optoma HD20 DLP Projector
With the roll out of Optoma?s HD20 DLP home projector last year, the reality of a 1080p projector lower than $1000 was finally realized. As Blu-ray is rapidly growing in popularity, there?s no reason that home theater gurus with growing collections of stunning 1080p transfers need to hold off on replacing that old 720p projector. The Optoma HD20 attempts to meet that need with 1080p output, 4000:1 contrast, and 1700 ANSI lumens. The retail MSRP of the unit is $999.99 and can be found slightly cheaper around the web. DesignThe design of the HD20 has a very small footprint, which makes it useful as a somewhat mobile projector. The white body has a sleek finish with silver trim. It can get dusty if positioned on a coffee table and the white finish obviously makes that more visible. The front grill ...
